Glenmorangie Taghta Unveiled

26th September 2014
Glenmorangie Taghta unveiled to the whisky fans who choose it.

It has been over a year in the coming but today Glenmorangie finally unveiled the limited edition Glenmorangie Taghta to their crowd of whisky fans around the world who helped source the single malt.

From today 12,000 bottles of Glenmorangie Taghta will be available exclusively to the whisky's army of fans who registered as Glenmorangie Cask Masters.

Launched in March 2013, Cask Masters invited fans to participate in all elements of developing a new whisky. The fans provided inspiration to the Glenmorangie Whisky Creation team for the casks in which the spirit was extra matured, helped to design the packaging and assisted with the creation of evocative imagery inspired by the whisky and its provenance.

For the final stage of Glenmorangie Cask Masters, enthusiasts were invited to suggest a location where the new whisky should be unveiled and win the chance to be present at the event itself. From an exclusive shortlist the home of Glenmorangie in the Scottish Highlands was selected as the desired location for the final reveal.

So now the selection process and marketing of the whisky is over what about the whisky, is it a bottle whisky drinkers would want to have in their cabinet? Unfortunately I have no idea as I haven't had a chance to taste it but as so many Glenmorangie whisky fans had a say in its selection I would hope that it is a decent single malt.

If you have forgotten the details of the whisky which is easily done for a release which has taken over a year to become available to buy since its selection here is a reminder. The Glenmornagie Taghta according to the Glenmorangie web site has, and I quote, a characteristic "Aging Potential" of "10+ Years", which reads to me as it is then technically 10 years old. The whisky has been extra-matured in exclusive Manzanilla sherry casks which would have likely produced a big full bodied sherried whisky. Bottled at 46% ABV and non chill-filtered. Glenmorangie describe it as having savoury, salty and sweet notes of caramelised orange and lemon, olives and toasty oak complimented by a rich and mellow aftertaste of toffee, chocolate and dates.

So is this a very clever bit of drawn out marketing to sell whisky fans a Manzanilla sherry cask finished whisky for £69 which going by Glenmorangie's web site is a 10 year old or is this a must have limited edition which fans of the iconic distillery shouldn't miss, my fingers are crossed that it is a good one.

If you are still unsure whether to go for a bottle the full official distillery tasting note is below and if you do want a bottle head over to www.glenmorangie.com/caskmasters.

Glenmorangie Taghta Tasting Note:

Bottled at 46% ABV. Non Chill Filtered. Aged 10+ years? Price £69.

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Curiously nutty and salty at full strength, reminding you of brazil nuts embedded in toffee, hints of linseed oil, and some savoury cured ham. A splash of water opens up the whisky, bringing into play a burst of aged balsamic vinegar, dried fruits, tangy-orange, and a gentle reminder of Christmas incense and spice.

Taste:  The texture is oily and viscous, with a delicious primary flavour of caramelised orange and lemon, plump sultanas, a hint of brown sugar, but then a wave of salty, briny notes – olives, salted cashew nuts and some nice, toasty oak flavours, like walnut and leather.

Finish: The long aftertaste is rich, mellow and soothing, with flavours of toffee, caramel, chocolate and dates.
