Scapa Glansa
a new peated whisky cask finish joins
the Scapa core range.

Brothers has announced a new addition to
its Scapa distillery core range, the
Scapa Glansa, what makes this
interesting is they are hailing Scapa
Glansa as the first peated single malt
whisky from the Orkney distillery which
is quite surprising we haven't had one
before now given its location and the
popularity of its Orkney neighbour
Highland Park and their lightly peated
single malt whisky.
They tell me that the new Scapa Glansa
was matured in 100% first-fill American
Oak casks, then finished in peated casks
so technically not a peated single malt
as the marketing behind this new release
implies.
As I know and I am sure most
knowledgeable whisky drinkers will know
also, finishing non-peated whisky in a
cask which previously held peated whisky
usually imparts no more than a subtle
hint of peat. The amount of peat you
will find in the whisky is variable and
depends very much on where the peated
casks were sourced from, the level of
peatiness of the whisky that was
originally matured in the casks and of
course how long the new whisky was
finished in the peated casks.
Finishing a whisky in a peated cask can
add a very subtle and a very enjoyable
extra dimension to a whisky,
unfortunately I haven't had a chance to
taste the new Scapa Glansa myself so I
cannot vouch for its quality or how much
influence the peated cask finish has
imparted on the whisky. If I get the
chance to taste it I will update you but
meanwhile the official producer's
tasting note is below but I would guess
the peat influence will be very subtle
and the predominant cask influence here
will be from the 1st Fill American oak
casks.
Interestingly I noted that the packaging
only refers to the whisky being matured
in American oak and does not mention that it was 100% first-fill
American Oak, as stated in the marketing
I received, the 1st fill casks will
clearly have thee significant impact on
the whisky. Also interestingly the
packaging does not declare Glansa as a
Peated single malt as headlined in the
marketing I received the packaging does
state that it is a "Peated Whisky Cask
Finish" which it is and to me a peated
whisky cask finish whisky will be a
significantly different whisky from a
peated whisky.
I also noted that Scapa Master
Distiller, Brian MacAulay was quoted as
saying that this was "Scapa’s first
peated single malt", I have to say I beg
to differ, it is a a peated whisky cask
finish single malt which is not the same
thing as a peated single malt.
Bottled at 40% ABV, each bottle carries
a batch number as well as the month and
year it was bottled, if you want to try the new Scapa Glansa
for yourself it should be appearing in
specialist whisky shops such as

Scapa Glansa Tasting Notes
|
Producer's Tasting Notes:
Nose: Fruity sweet with notes of
soft peach, pineapple, vanilla
intermingled with subtle bonfire smoke.
Taste: Peach and ripe pear
flavours and creamy caramel toffee and
vanilla balanced perfectly with soft
smoke.
Finish:
Very long with a markedly smoky finish.
