Douglas Laing
announce the release of
“SCALLYWAG” a sherried Small Batch Speyside
Vatted Malt.
The
team at Douglas Laing have certainly
been keeping themselves busy, only last
month they launched the
Old Particular
range of single malt whiskies this month
they are set to release another new addition
to the Douglas Laing core range of
whiskies. This time the innovative bunch
at Douglas Laing which now has Fred
Laing holding the reigns of the company,
accompanied by his daughter Cara have have created a
Speyside Vatted Malt named Scallywag.
Like Big Peat, Douglas Laing's
popular Islay Vatted Malt Scallywag is
bottled in small batches, it has been created
using only Speyside Malts including – amongst others – Mortlach, Macallan and
Glenrothes. With a pedigree like that I
am sure this will get the attention of
those of you who are partial to a
sherried Speyside dram.
Bottled
at a very respectable 46% ABV and non
chill-filtered, this Small Batch
bottling is a blend of first-fill
bourbon casks and many fine Spanish
Sherry Butts from where it has extracted
much of its richly spiced, vanilla'd
fruity character.
The name of the
whisky and the eye catching Fox Terrier
on the packaging haven't been dreamed up
in a marketing department they have a
close connection to Fred's family, it
was inspired by the long line of Douglas
Laing family Fox Terriers, which are
renowned for being sweet yet rather
mischievous dogs, it was therefore felt
the Scallywag name and Fox Terrier
design was most fitting for this richly
spiced and deliciously sweet Speyside
Vatted Malt.
Fred
Laing, Douglas Laing’s Managing Director
and proud Fox Terrier owner commented
"From a chance sketch by a designer of
our sweet, wee, rascal of a Fox Terrier,
our Scallywag Malt Whisky was born!
"Sweet" was the key which focused us on
Speyside. Its cask selection is
self-evidently heavy on the sherry
background, balanced by first-fill
bourbon casks – so the resulting
‘Vatted’ Malt comes with an excellent
pedigree”.
Douglas Laing’s Scallywag will be
available from UK and European
specialist Whisky retailers from this
month and throughout the rest of the
world by the end of this year. RRP
around £35

Douglas Laing Scallywag Tasting
Notes
|
William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
A lovely balance of vanilla tablet,
light playful oak spice prickle, orange
and raisins.
Taste:
Light creamy vanilla, stewed plum, a
graduation of zesty orange and lemon
peel, oak spice - ginger and cinnamon
some dark chocolate.
Finish:
Sweet, zesty
orange, a touch of cinnamon, coffee and vanilla.
Comment:
A lovely well balanced well put together
vatted malt. A good portion
of sherry for the sherry oak lovers but
it is not a big bold sherry monster, the
sherry has been balanced well with the
bourbon cask whisky, loads going on,
full of flavour. A classic quality
sherried Speyside whisky with a superb
balance of vanilla and sherry.
SMW Score
87/100
