Whisky Focus - Scallywag Cask Strength Limited Edition

Scallywag Cask Strength Limited Edition

1st June 2015

Douglas Laing release Scallywag Cask Strength No.1 Limited Edition.

Glasgow based independent bottler Douglas Laing today announced the release of a cask strength version of Scallywag, their popular Speyside vatted malt which they originally launched back in 2013.

The Scallywag Cask Strength Limited Edition No.1 bottling has been created using a impressive collection Speyside Malts including, amongst others, Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes. Bottled at 53.6%, so this is no wee Scallywag, the extra strength is sure to heighten the whisky's flavour and complexity.

Douglas Laing tell me that there will be only 1,000 cases available globally, I assume there are 6 bottles in a case, so I make it 6,000 bottles available worldwide. I do hate it when whisky companies refer to limited releases in cases as case sizes do vary but I guess it is a bit of marketing spin which makes it sound more limited. Of course I may be wrong and there are 3 or even 9 bottles in a case of Scallywag Cask Strength. The bottle label does states that this is Limited Edition No.1, indicating there will be more to follow but the No.1 bottling is sure to be highly sought after by whisky enthusiasts.

The unique packaging features a rather startled Scallywag, his ears pricked and his monocle blasted off having just experienced his cask strength namesake for the first time.

To celebrate the launch of the Scallywag Cask Strength Edition Douglas Laing have given the beloved Scallywag Fox Terrier his own Facebook page. It’s live now at www.facebook.com/scallywagwhisky, featuring the opportunity to win a bottle for Father’s Day, the original "Man’s Best Friend".

Says Douglas Laing’s Managing Director (and proud Fox Terrier owner) Fred Laing: "This Cask Strength Scallywag bottling makes the wee dog’s eyes pop, his ears blow open and his monocle ping - but it will make your palate sing. The mellifluously fruity, spicy character and barley, mocha, vanilla and orange-y flavours make it a human treat worth begging for."

Douglas Laing’s Scallywag Cask Strength limited edition will be available from specialist Whisky retailers from June 2015. Beware of the dog!

Douglas Laing's complete range including the new limited edition Scallywag Cask Strength will be available from The Whisky Exchange

Scallywag Review

Note my review is for the standard bottling of Scallywag which is bottled at 46% ABV, but I am sure the new cask strength version will be every bit as good and more with its extra strength and I am sure extra flavour and complexity.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A lovely balance of vanilla tablet, light playful oak spice prickle, orange and raisins.

Taste: Light creamy vanilla, stewed plum, a graduation of zesty orange and lemon peel, oak spice - ginger and cinnamon some dark chocolate.

Finish: Sweet, zesty orange, a touch of cinnamon, coffee and vanilla.

Comment: A lovely well balanced well put together vatted malt. A good portion of sherry for the sherry oak lovers but it is not a big bold sherry monster, the sherry has been balanced well with the bourbon cask whisky, loads going on, full of flavour. A classic quality sherried Speyside whisky with a superb balance of vanilla and sherry.

SMW Score 87/100

Producer's Tasting Notes For Scallywag Cask Strength:

Colour: Cask Strength Scallywag has a rich, dark colour – extracted from the many fine Spanish Sherry Butts selected.

Nose: It carries a richly spiced character on the nose woven through with delicious vanilla from the Bourbon Hogsheads selected.

Taste: On the big, chewy palate detect layer on layer of dark chocolate, more vanilla and sweet stewed fruit fused with spice (nutmeg and cinnamon) and treacle – much of which can be attributed to years slumbering in those Sherry Butts.

Finish: The finish displays a burst of zesty orange with sweet tobacco, cocoa and rich fruit cake.
