"Rock Oyster" Island Vatted Malt From Douglas Laing

12th January 2015
Douglas Laing complete their regional vatted malt whisky range with the release of Rock Oyster Island Vatted Malt.

Douglas Laing & Co. the Glasgow based whisky specialists today announced the release of "Rock Oyster" Island Vatted Malt Whisky. Rock Oyster completes the Douglas Laing's range of regional vatted malt Scotch whiskies.

Like the other vatted malts in their regional range, Rock Oyster is a Small Batch bottling created using a selection of single malts sourced from the region it represents, namely whiskies distilled on the Islands of Jura, Islay, Arran and Orkney.

Like Douglas Laing's other popular Regional Vatted Malts, Big Peat (Islay), Scallywag (Speyside) and Timorous Beastie (Highland). Rock Oyster is non chill-filtered and has no added colouring and it has been bottled at a very respectable strength of 46.8% ABV. Douglas Laing describe the new Small Batch bottling as having a truly maritime and oceanic character of sea-salt, sweet peat, smoke, honey and pepper.

As we have come to expect from the team at Douglas Laing, much attention and consideration has been spent creating the packaging for the new whisky which features a bespoke illustration of both an oyster, and a nautical scene, while telling the story of this seafaring spirit.

Douglas Laing’s Managing Director Fred Laing, commented: "Rock Oyster showcases the archetypal Island character of gentle peat-smoke, vanilla’d honey and salt. If I could select just one dram to transport the Whisky enthusiast to the Islands of Scotland, it would be this one. Rock Oyster will sit proudly alongside our other core regionally themed Vatted Malts – Big Peat from Islay, Scallywag from Speyside and Timorous Beastie from the Highlands – hopefully contributing to Douglas Laing’s continued growth."

Douglas Laing’s Rock Oyster will be available from specialist Whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange from January 2015.

Douglas Laing Rock Oyster Tasting Note

Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to taste the new Rock Oyster but this is how DL describe the small batch vatted malt.

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Douglas Laing’s Rock Oyster is massively maritime in style and like its namesake carries a hidden delicacy inside. Anticipate wave soaked rocks and a salty oceanic, fresh influence on the nose with a more subtle palate carrying soft and rather sweet peat paralleled with smoke, honey, damp ash, liquorice and late pepper. All that is neatly replicated on the long, more-ish finish.
