Whisky Focus - Port Charlotte 10 Year Old

Port Charlotte 10 Year Old

12th October 2012
The first core range release Port Charlotte 10 year old.

The first Port Charlotte spirit was distilled in 2001, and every year since 2006 the Bruichladdich distillery have released a limited edition bottling – PC5/6/7, etc – to share with a few thousand of whisky cognoscenti the fascinating evolution of this unique Islay dram – the elegance of spirit produced by their famous tall, long necked stills and the signature heavily peated style of whisky for which the island of Islay has become famous over the many years.

Now that spirit has reached its first landmark age – ten years. Ten slow years maturing in their Islay warehouses – Bruichladdich is the only major distiller to mature all their spirit on Islay itself – soaking up the "ozone"- rich marine air that blows in off the Atlantic. And, significantly, this is the first time that they have had the luxury of being able to offer an age-statement Port Charlotte as part their core portfolio, rather than just a limited edition. This Port Charlotte 10 year old is now here to stay – the classic, elegance and finesse of Bruichladdich seamlessly married with the power and presence of heavy peat, left to mature slowly and un-hurried for 10 Islay years. Very special.

This release of Port Charlotte 10 year old marks the end of a journey for the limited release Port Charlotte bottlings PC5/6/7, etc and is also a milestone for the Bruichladdich distillery, rather than just being a limited edition the Port Charlotte 10 year old joins the core range of whiskies from the Bruichladdich distillery and is here to stay. It is heavily peated to 40 PPM, non-chill-filtered, natural colour and bottled at 46% ABV.

Port Charlotte 10 Year Old Tasting Notes

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Nose: The sherry & peat are the first to rise; they warm & seduce the senses into an Islay frame of mind with little slipstreams of lemon peel, black pepper, eucalyptus, cinnamon, heather and mint - all being caressed & cooled by the Atlantic coastal notes which merge beautifully with the earthy flora & fauna aromatics of the peat moors, heaths and woodlands of this special place.

Taste: Slowly the combination of both bourbon and sherry wood arrives in an unhurried wave of sticky dates, mellow Oloroso, chocolate orange, smoked malt, roasted walnuts & dark toffee. At this point the palate surrenders to seduction by the most handsome spirit it has ever encountered.

Finish: As you near your journey’s end, you will notice there is a subtle change in the flavour as the American bourbon wood sunsets the experience with a brilliant flash of Spanish flair - dark, passionate, sweet and desirable.
