Old Pulteney WK217 Spectrum

27th June 2012
Old Pulteney launches WK217 Spectrum as last in current limited edition "WK" series for travel retail.

Old Pulteney’s latest travel retail exclusive, the limited edition WK217 Spectrum single malt Scotch whisky.

Bottled in 100cl at 46% ABV, it will launch exclusively as World Duty Free Group’s ‘Malt of the Month’ for July 2012 and will be sold in select World Duty Free and World of Whiskies shops at British airports.

WK217 Spectrum is the third and final release in the limited edition ‘WK’ series of Old Pulteney travel retail exclusive expressions, all of which celebrate the illustrious fishing heritage of Wick and Caithness where the award-winning spirit is distilled. It follows WK499 Isabella Fortuna (Cask Strength) launched in 2010 and WK209 Good Hope launched in 2011.

The exclusive release of 9600 bottles is from oak casks selected by Stuart Harvey, Master Blender at Inver House Distillers Ltd. Matured entirely in ex American and ex Spanish oak sherry butts, the exclusive new expression is named after the pioneering fishing boat Spectrum, registered WK217. Wick is home to the Pulteney distillery, the most northerly distillery on the UK mainland and was the largest fishing port in Europe in the 19th century.

Dark copper in appearance, Old Pulteney WK217 is a full bodied, sweet and spicy malt, with traces of vanilla, green apples and raisins. On the palate the initial sweet hints of citrus fruits and sherry lead to a complex and well balanced long lasting finish.

Following the Old Pulteney WK217 exclusive launch with World Duty Free Group, which will last for 60 days from 27th June 2012, the whisky will have a wider distribution to European airport and ferry travel retail operators, while stock last. It will be priced at Ł39.99 per bottle.

Speaking about the launch, Old Pulteney’s Senior Brand Manager, Margaret Mary Clarke commented:

"Old Pulteney’s travel retail exclusives bring the brand’s rich maritime heritage to life and we are very excited to showcase this to global travelers. Travel retail is an important channel for Old Pulteney and we are extremely proud of the exclusive expressions that we continue to launch throughout 2012."

Tasting Notes

Charles Maclean's Tasting Notes:

Colour: Deep gold, with copper lights; a rich natural hue.

Nose: The first impression on the nose is of dried fruits macerated in spirit - figs, apricots, sultanas - becoming fruitcake mix (before it's baked), with a suggestion of pencil shavings or sandalwood as a base-note. Water suppresses the fruity aromas and raises maritime notes - brine, dry seaweed, flaking boat varnish.

Taste: At full strength, the whisky has a generously smooth texture. The taste is richly sweet to start, and lightly tannic in the finish, with Old Pulteney's keynote salty tang and a lingering, warming spiciness in the aftertaste. A dash of water reduces the initial sweetness and the tannic dryness, rounding off the taste nicely and introducing a mouth-cooling effect. Easy to drink and more-ish!
