The world’s
peatiest whisky just got peatier.
Octomore 5 is the fifth annual release
is peated to an extraordinary 169ppm.

 My
apologies for being a bit slow bringing
you the news of the new Octomore 5 but as it is
only just starting to appear in the
whisky shops I thought I would bring it
to your attention.
For those of you who are not familiar
with Octomore, it is produced at the
Bruichladdich distillery. It started out as a late night "What if?"
idea after a few drams: what if they
distilled the most heavily-peated barley
humanly possible – in their unique
stills. What would the result be?
The results of that late-night musing
are now legend. Since the first release
in 2007 Octomore has always been the
most heavily peated whisky in the world,
but few would have guessed then that
this extraordinary dram would not just
remain a peat-head’s trophy spirit, but
become so fabulously and widely
acclaimed – notably voted Single malt of
the Year, 2010 by Jim Murray in his
definitive “Whisky Bible”in which he Jim
said:
"Forget about the age. Don’t be
frightened by the phenol levels. Great
whisky is not about numbers; it’s about
excellent distillation and careful
maturation."
For this, the fifth annual release of
Octomore, Bruichladdich have dialed up
the peat to a new record, 169PPM, but
the spirit retains the elegance and
poise delivered by their tall,
long-necked Bruichladdich stills and the
creamy vanillins of American-oak
maturation – the latest expression of
what has become the new cult Islay.
The most highly-peated whisky ever – now
peated to 169ppm. A limited edition of
only 18,000 numbered bottles worldwide.
It was bottled in 2012 aged 5 years at a
cask strength of 59.5% ABV,
non-chill-filtered and colouring free.

Producer's Tasting Notes:
Nose: Blazing peat fires send sparks of joy onto the
unsuspecting olfactory system
captivating and ravishing the senses
which have never had such natural
pleasure. Now they are aroused,
thrilled, stimulated and in awe of the
strength and youth of the spirit. The
barley is shimmering, the oak mellowing,
the fruits bursting, the Atlantic
squalls detonating. The peat smoke
smouldering, the sea mists swirling, the
heathland hedonistic; welcome to the
aromatic world of the hand made, heavy
peated, slow distilled, maritime matured
single malt.
Taste:
The texture of the spirit is endless,
super smooth. On entry it is absolutely
sensational; it’s like "Wow"! Don’t
worry you’re going to be ok, I promise –
the initial palate presence is one of
juniper oil, peat smoked barley, salted
biscuits, light iodine, crushed
cinnamon, then on the second phase the
citrus flavours of grapefruit,
tangerine, honeyed lemon together with
the sweetness of pear & pineapple add a
whole new dimension to the complexity of
the spirit. The fruits balance the
marine notes; the oaky nutty ginger
flavours combat the peat and the citrus
helps cool the heat of the fire. Perfect
balance.
Finish:
The heat from the peat embers will warm
the soul into the wee small hours and as
you awaken next morning your senses will
ask: "Did that really happen?", hoping
with all your heart that it will happen
again.
