Mortlach 25
Year
Old sits at the top of the Mortlach
range, a highly complex and
multi-faceted single malt.
Sitting
at the top of the new premium Mortlach
range is the Mortlach 25 Year Old,
Mortlach describe this as a highly
complex and multi-faceted single malt
which combines roasting spices and an
almost animal intensity with dense
layers of decadent sweetness.
The
Mortlach 25 Year Old was matured in
refill American oak hogshead casks and
bottled at 43.4% ABV.
As you can see from the picture, the new bottling
is
presented in a highly distinctive
engineered style of Mortlach bottle. The design style of
the new bottle is rooted in an
engineered world and was inspired by the
one of the distillery's early owners,
entrepreneurial Scottish civil engineer
George Cowie, and his gifted and equally
ambitious son Dr Alexander Cowie.
Engraved on the bottle is a reference
to Mortlach's unusual partial-triple
distillation process which is often
described as ‘2.81 Distilled’. The
engineering cues incorporated in the
bottle design are most visible in the
metal structure of the 18 year old
bottle which protects, enhances and
displays the fine single malt within the
bottle. The design of the metal
structure has been inspired by some of
the great engineering feats of the
Victorian period, especially the
cantilever bridge design made famous on
Scotland’s very own Forth Road Bridge.
Since it's
launch last year we haven't really heard
much about the new whisky and there are
very few reviews to be found but luckily
for us, Murray Cohen, Order of the
Companions of the Quaich Canada and our
very own
Scotch Malt Whisky Forum member,
Quaich1 has kindly submitted a review
for us following an "Evening of
Scottish Virtuosity" premium whisky
tasting event where Mortlach brand
ambassador Georgie Bell unveiled the new
Mortlach range to East Coast Canada in
Toronto. You can read what Murray
thought of the Mortlach 25 year old below.
After tasting the Mortlach 25 year old
Murray commented: "This reminds me of
some of the majestic full-bodied drams
that only age can accomplish and clearly
it has done so here. For me, the 25 Year
is the star of the new Mortlach OB
range. Its profile is tempered by it's
maturity and all the "i's" are dotted
and the "t's" crossed here. It is
memorable in quality on the nose, palate
and aftertaste. Perfectly balanced."
The Mortlach 25 Year Old is now available from
The Whisky Exchange
priced £585

Mortlach 25 Year Old Review

Review submitted by Murray Cohen, Order

Bottled at
43.4% ABV.
Murray Cohen's Tasting Notes:
Colour:
Clear Bright Amber.
Nose: A magic carpet ride of
aromas subtly address the olfactory
sense: aromatic pipe tobacco, slices of
fresh papaya, a nuttiness, waxy candle,
honeysuckle, a hint of black olives and
faint black liquorice. The delight here
is like the Babushka doll where one
aroma is nested in another,
metamorphosing by the second and
creating aromatic wonder.
Taste: A rush of "thick"
fruitiness shifting to luscious
chocolate with an earthy complexion. A
lovely presence of white truffles
unfolds.
Finish:
A long finish. Perfume traces flow like
a curvy river bed; the deep aromas and
flavors continue to expand like a prism
reflecting light. There is so much to
explore as layers of fruit and chocolate
are peeled back.
Score:
97.5/100 |
