The Macallan
unveils The 1824 Masters Series Rare
Cask, Reflexion, No.6 & M.

The new Macallan 1824 Masters Series
sits above The Macallan 1824 Series (Gold,
Amber,
Sienna
and
Ruby)
which most of you will be familiar with
by now. The Macallan 1824 Masters Series
is without a doubt a stunningly presented
range of bottlings from the
iconic Speyside distillery which is well
known for its outstanding sherry cask
matured single malt whisky and rarer
expressions from the distillery have
always been sought after by whisky
connoisseurs and collectors.
Will
this new series of No Age Statement
whiskies catch the attention of these
same whisky connoisseurs and collectors,
well that remains to be seen. The new
whiskies are presented in exquisite
bottles and packaging but I am sure
whisky connoisseurs and collectors are
looking for more than just looks and
with no age statement to indicate the
rarity of the whisky in the bottles
buyers will be looking to reviews of the
new whiskies but strangely there appears
to be a distinct lack of reviews of the new
whiskies, in fact there are none
which I could quote you.
The 1824 Masters Series is made up of
three new Macallan whiskies, although
The Macallan Rare Cask is only available
exclusively in the US from specialist
whisky retailers and selected bars, certainly one
for Macallan fans to look out for when visiting across the water. The
other two new whiskies are The Macallan
Reflexion and The Macallan No.6, the
three new whiskies join the Macallan M
which is at the top of the series.
You will be pleased to hear that the
colour of the new whiskies in the
Macallan 1824 Masters Series is derived
naturally from the casks the whisky
matured in, all of which were hand
picked by The Macallan’s Master Whisky
Maker, Bob Dalgarno. The Macallan tells
me that the collection
becomes increasingly dark and alluring
as you move up the range, increasing in
complexity, as the chosen casks
themselves become scarcer and the range
progresses from Rare Cask to Reflexion
and then to No. 6. This is testament to
Bob Dalgarno's meticulous selection of
sherry seasoned oak casks.
Ken Grier, Director of Malts, Edrington,
commented: "The new 1824 Masters Series
represents an extremely exciting
development for The Macallan. The
stunning designs and overall imprint of
this new collection are not only worthy
of some of our most complex and precious
single malt whiskies, they celebrate the
very foundations that make The Macallan
so special – our glorious range of
natural colour and the outstanding
quality of our casks ."
The Macallan Reflexion, Macallan No.6 and Macallan M will be
available worldwide from whisky
specialist shops such as
The Whisky Exchange, whilst Rare Cask
will be available exclusively
in the US from specialist whisky
retailers and selected bars.

The Macallan Reflexion Tasting
Note
|
The Macallan Reflexion is bottled at 43%
ABV and is priced at £895, the whisky is
a reflection of the foremost influence
of first fill sherry seasoned oak casks,
drawing its colour and flavour from
maturation in hogshead casks. These are
smaller casks which allow for greater
surface area of wood to interact with
the spirit to deliver an intricate
character driven by the influence of
both Spanish and American oak casks.
Producer's Tasting Notes:
Colour:
Blood Orange.
Nose: Orange and citrus fruits open up like fresh fruit on a
sunny market day, their zest is fresh,
the fruit is firm. A slight waxy note
fades to fresh green apples. Then the
sweet stall: chocolate, thick fudge,
boiled sweets, aniseed; caramel toffees
almost overwhelm whilst white chocolate
truffles are hidden. Just as you are
ready to taste, a delivery of bananas in
fresh, sweet oak arrives.
Taste: Initial light citrus zest with new oak quickly gives
way to a juicier sweetness, thick and
succulent, of lemon and orange. Raisin,
sultana and apple, with a hint of
cinnamon and ginger, are subtle.
Finish:
Boiled sweets add balance to a glimpse
of toasted oak to give a medium and soft
finish.
The Macallan Reflexion is now available
from The Whisky Exchange priced £895

The Macallan No.6 Tasting
Note
|
The Macallan No.6 is
bottled at 43% ABV and is priced at
£2,800. It brings together the art of
The Macallan Master Whisky Maker with
the exquisite craftsmanship of Lalique
resulting in a piece of timeless
elegance. Exclusively designed and
crafted for The Macallan, this flawless
crystal decanter pays homage to the
single malt’s heritage through its use
of triangular facets representing the
Six Pillars, incorporating the iconic
triangular feature as a key element of
its creation.
Producer's Tasting Notes:
Colour:
Spanish Sunset.
Nose: Spanish oak casks deliver wonderful rich notes, elegant
and polished. Raisin, dates and figs
dominate like a mountain of fruit;
sultana and toffee apples add texture
and depth. The weight of flavour
practically squeezes the juice from the
raisins, dark and rich with great
viscosity. Ginger and cinnamon gently
dance around the edges - the ginger
slightly dry, the cinnamon soft. Dark
chocolate is majestic, whilst vanilla
sweetness lingers in the background.
Taste: Heavy and sumptuous. Like a rich fruit cake with
raisin, dates and figs, apples,
sultanas, orange; then ginger, nutmeg,
cinnamon and hints of clove. Oak notes
are like velvet, soft and chic,
Finish:
Silky smooth, this is a cake to savour
with a long and full finish.
The Macallan No.6 is now available from
The Whisky Exchange priced £2,800

The Macallan M Tasting Note
|
The Macallan
M is
bottled at 44.5% ABV and is priced at
£3,300. The pinnacle of Macallan's 1824
Masters Series, a vatting of rare
Macallan whiskies stretching back as far
as the 1940's showing off the
distillery's old fashioned, sherry cask
matured style. Presented in a Lalique
decanter designed by Fabien Baron, it's
beautifully designed and a great
addition to the collection of any fan of
old school Macallan.
Producer's Tasting Notes:
Colour:
Rosewood.
Nose:
Dried fruits ripen, then soften showing
off a velvet sateen. Vanilla accompanies
green apple hand in hand neither taking
the lead. Ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon
create an ensemble in the background,
with polished oak offering to overstate
yet never does but plays with a depth of
resinous, juicy oranges.
Taste:
Opens rich in wood spices slowly showing
all their viscosity. Wood smoke flits in
and out. The heavier raisin and sultana
flavours then take over.
Finish:
Meandering to a long full finish.
The Macallan M is now available from The
Whisky Exchange priced £3,300

The Macallan Rare Cask Tasting
Note
|
The Macallan Rare Cask
is bottled at 43% ABV and is available
exclusively in the US, it is made with an
high proportion of first fill sherry
seasoned oak casks.
Producer's Tasting Notes:
Colour:
Mahogany.
Nose: Opulent, yet soft and slightly meandering, picture an
orchestra setting up: quiet vanilla with
deep notes, already in tune; raisin bold
and booming, though only in spells;
chocolate a star performer, but not a
standout; a sweet ensemble of apple,
lemon and orange, beautifully balanced
with a spicy quartet of root ginger,
cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. Then oak
conducts, mature and elegant, with
patience only time delivers.
Taste: The spicy quartet leads, loud and full, unwavering in
their performance. Raisin dares to
temper - and succeeds!! – but oak takes
control; timeless, polished, rich and
resonating. Vanilla and chocolate
compliment each other in the background.
Finish:
Light citrus zest, yet full and warming. |
