Review of Laphroaig Lore.
 Laphroaig Lore which is labelled "the richest of the rich" is the work of the current Laphroaig distillery manager John Campbell, to create Lore John has drawn from a variety of casks including first-fill Bourbon barrels, quarter casks and Oloroso Sherry hogsheads to give Lore its richness.
The name of the whisky "Lore" by definition means "accumulated knowledge or beliefs held by a group about a subject, especially when passed from generation to generation by oral tradition", so Lore is in its own way is acknowledging the traditions and tales passed down from generation to generation by each of Laphroaig’s Distillery Managers since 1815.
Bottled at 48% ABV, Laphroaig Lore carries no age statement, I have read on various online sources that it is a combination of 7 to 21 year old whisky with 3 more ages in between them but Laphroaig has passed no such information on to me with their official announcement of the new release but I was pleased to note that on the Laphroaig web site they state that "‘Lore is a marriage of classical Laphroaig styles and many ages… some as old as vintage 1993’". Great to see a big player like Laphroaig being more transparent about what is in the bottle and not being afraid of getting their wrists slapped for disclosing such info without an clear age statement on the bottle.
I am sure the Laphroaig fans amongst you will be pleased to hear that John Campbell describes Lore as "a massive whisky, as bold as it is deep, and one that I sincerely hope does justice to the many generations of Laphroaig distillery managers".
Only a limited amount of Lore will be created each year although no official numbers have been disclosed, Lore will be available in the UK, Germany, the Nordics, south-east Asia, US and Canada. Priced around £78.
