Kilchoman 2009 Vintage Review

19th September 2017
Kilchoman release 2009 Vintage a combination of fresh and refill bourbon barrels as well as three 2008 Oloroso sherry butts to add additional layers of rich cooked fruits.

Kilchoman 2009 VintageThe Kilchoman Distillery has released Kilchoman 2009 Vintage, and 8 year old whisky and the oldest release to date from the Islay farm distillery.

Although the new whisky carries a vintage statement of 2009, some of the casks which have gone into the whisky were distilled in 2008

The specific casks, chosen by Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder, are mostly a combination of fresh and refill bourbon barrels though Anthony also selected three 2008 Oloroso sherry butts to add additional layers of rich cooked fruits to balance with the lighter citrus and vanilla of the bourbon barrels. All previous Vintage expressions have been matured exclusively in bourbon barrels.

Anthony Wills commented on the latest release, saying; "The evolution of Kilchoman single malt is well represented through our Vintage range. Now at eight years of maturation, the balance and depth of character coming through on both the nose and the palate is incredible. The Oloroso sherry influence in the 2009 Vintage compared to the previous releases has given this whisky a different dimension with layered fruit and added sweet notes."

The Kilchoman 2008 Vintage was bottled at 46% ABV and will be available from specialist whisky shops such as Master of Malt with an RRP of 67.50 while stocks last.

Kilchoman 2009 Vintage Review

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Teasingly light lemon citrus infused peat, a little vanilla sweetness and a little sultana fruit lurking in the background.

Taste: Sweet peat coats the mouth, still a touch of vanilla and a gentle sultana juiciness adds to the pleasure, a little citrusy lemon zest.

Finish: The sweet peat smoke fades leaving citrus zest and mildly drying oak.

Comment: The addition of the Oloroso sherry butts to this years vintage release has certainly added a very enjoyable, very gentle, sweet richness to the whisky. What can I say other than another very good quality Kilchoman single malt.

SMW Score 90/100
