Whisky Focus - Kilchoman 100% Islay 4th Edition

Kilchoman 100% Islay 4th Edition Review

20th May 2014
Kilchoman launch 4th limited edition of its popular lighter peated 100% Islay malt.

Just a quick announcement for those of you who are fans of Kilchoman, one of Scotland's smallest malt whisky distilleries. Kilchoman have announced the release of the Kilchoman 100% Islay 4th Edition.

For this 4th edition the folks at Kilchoman have selected 40 first fill bourbon barrels, 32 five year old and 8 four year old for the limited edition bottling which will be available worldwide.

As usual all parts of the production process for the Kilchoman 100% Islay have taken place at the distillery – from barley to bottle. The barley is grown, malted, distilled, matured and bottled at Kilchoman making for a unique character. Bottled at 50% ABV and peated to a lower level to that of other Kilchoman releases, 100% Islay has a lighter, fresher feel to it. This latest edition is similar to earlier editions which had citrus and lemon notes come through with soft peat smoke and a long silky smooth finish.

If you prefer a more heavily peated whisky then look out for the excellent Kilchoman Machir Bay and Loch Gorm expressions.

Kilchoman 100% Islay 4th Edition will be available from specialist whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange priced around £64.99

Kilchoman 100% Islay 4th Edition Tasting Notes

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Colour: Pale gold in colour, no fake tans here.

Nose: Lovely enticing deliciously sweet soft peat smoke. Some lemon and a touch of pear behind the smoke.

Taste: Brown sugar coated peat, vanilla, coffee, tea biscuit and a bit of lemon and oaky spice.

Finish: A long finish. Mildly drying oak spice, the vanilla and sweet peat have united and very slowly fade.

Comment: This really is an outstanding quality young (4/5 year old) peaty Islay dram that shows maturity beyond its years and proof that whisky should be bottled at around 50%. Just how much better is Kilchoman going to get? Another great choice of casks, the first fill bourbon casks really suits the slightly lighter peated Kilchoman spirit than you will find in the distillery's other expressions but more than enough peat here to put a smile on the hardest to please peat heads face.

SMW Score 91/100
