Whisky Focus - Icons of Arran Series The Westie

Icons of Arran Series The Westie

7th March 2011

Meet Ruaraidh (pronounced Roo-ree) the West Highland Terrier who belongs to Isle of Arran Distillery Manager James MacTaggart. Ruaraidh is independent of character with a mischievous glint in his eye and is much admired by visitors to the Arran Distillery in Lochranza. Ruaraidh is the inspiration for the name of the third bottle in the Icons of Arran Series.

This new limited edition bottling was drawn from 22 ex-Sherry Hogsheads distilled in 1998 and specially selected by James MacTaggart under the careful supervision of Ruaraidh of course. After 12 years of maturation this expression of Arran is rich & warming with a delightful complexity.

The Icons of Arran The Westie was bottled at 46% ABV, it is non chill-filtered with no added colouring and is a limited edition of 6000 bottles which will be distributed worldwide.

Given the quality of the first two Icons of Arran bottlings I expect that this new addition to the series will appeal to both the whisky collector and connoisseur.

Icons of Arran The Westie Tasting Notes

Producer's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A fresh aroma with notes of toasted oak, treacle-toffee & orange zest.

Taste: Full-bodied and buttery with an initial rush of vanilla essence and Demerara sugar. The sweet character subsides leaving cocoa powder and cardamom seeds.

Finish: Malty and smooth with voluptuous spice.
