Whisky Focus - Highland Park Dark Origins

Highland Park Dark Origins

10th July 2014
Introducing Dark Origins, a deeper, dark, richer sherried Highland Park.

Highland Park Dark Origins is the latest addition to the Highland Park Core range of whiskies.

Dark Origins is a non-chill filtered single malt with an ABV of 46.8%, launched exclusively in Harrods from 1st July – 14th July then it will start to appear on the shelves of whisky specialist shops from mid July and it will be rolled out internationally throughout autumn 2014.

Highland Park describe it as a rich mahogany coloured whisky, personally I would say it is more a auburn polished mahogany but the important thing is and I am sure you will all agree like other Highland Park bottlings this colour is 100% natural as Highland Park is one of the few distilleries not using distiller’s caramel to give their whisky a fake tan.

The colour of the Highland Park Dark Origins comes from the use of twice as many first fill sherry casks than is used in the classic Highland Park 12 year old. These sherry casks don't just add colour they also give the whisky a much richer flavour with sherried spice, chocolate and the signature sweet Highland Park smoke which fans of the Orcadian dram will have come to know and love.

You may have noticed I haven't mentioned the age of the Dark Origins, this is because it has no age statement but having tasted the extremely small sample sent to me from Highland Park I can say that there is no sign of any young stuff in it and I would say this is around 12 to 15 years old.

Gerry Tosh, Highland Parks Global Marketing Manager, said: "Cask management is so very crucial to our work at Highland Park. We have strived to raise the bar, working tirelessly in sourcing the right wood and then working and finessing the balances to ensure we create single malt that is rich, warm and enticing in flavour. Dark Origins sits in the heart of our core range complimenting them perfectly – distinct in itself, but always and forever a classic Highland Park."

Dark Origins has an RRP of £64.95.

Highland Park Dark Origins Review

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Colour: Auburn polished mahogany.

Nose: Rich dark fruit, nutty, burnt sugar, vanilla toffee.

Taste:  A silky smooth delivery of lovely dark sherried fruit - burnt raisins and sultanas, milk chocolate, vanilla peaks through and a lovely touch of sweet HP peat smoke. Behind the lovely dark fruit some cinnamon, dry ginger and oak spice.

Finish: A rich dark sherried mildly drying finish with slowly fading sweet oak spice and smoke.

Comments: It has no age statement but I would say it is no youngster, my guess is that the majority of the whisky in the Dark Origins is around 12 to 15 years old. A deeper, darker and deliciously sherry richer Highland Park, non chill-filtered and bottled at 46.8% ABV. The sherry is in charge but the the classic HP DNA is still there. Great to see HP add something different to their core range, a must try for HP and sherried whisky fans although they are pushing it a bit with the price £64.95.

SMW Score 88/100
