Second Great Northern Distillery Goes Into Production

25th September 2015

Great Northern Distillery Single malt and Pot Still distillery goes into prodution.

You will recall back in August when I announced that a 30 million bottle a year capacity three-column still Irish grain whiskey distillery, the first of two distillery's to be built on the former Harp Brewery site in Dundalk, Co. Louth, Ireland had gone into production, well this week on the Dundalk site the grain distillery was joined by three mighty copper pot stills, Fionn, Oisin and Setanta (yes the stills have names) of its sister distillery.

The three copper pot stills will. produce a full range of single malt, peated malt and pot still whiskeys taking The Great Northern Distillery's combined annual output to 50 million bottles.

Both distilleries at the Great Northern Distillery will supply a range of whiskies including "New Fill" whiskey to the numerous new Irish distilleries coming on stream and to the Retail Own Label and Private Label segments worldwide. They will of course also be making whiskey for their own use, the Great Northern Distillery owns the famous "Burkes" and "Skylark" brands.

The popularity of all styles of Irish whiskey be it grain, blended, single malt or pot still whiskey is growing rapidly and is expected to double sales to 250 million bottles by 2024, which is still only a small fraction of Scotch sales.

The Great Northern Distillery is owned by the Teeling family, Jim Finn and David Hynes.

It will be a few years before you get the chance to taste anything produced at the Great Northern Distillery but while you wait you will find a excellent range of Irish whiskey available from specialist Whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange
