Whisky Focus - The Glenrothes Vintage Reserve

The Glenrothes Vintage Reserve

15th October 2014
The Glenrothes Vintage Reserve comprises of 10 different vintages which span the last three decades, from 1989 to 2007.

Berry Bros. & Rudd Spirits has released The Glenrothes Vintage Reserve and like many new single malts releases lately the the new expression carries no age statement but in an unique move The Glenrothes have revealed all the Vintages which have gone into the new whisky.

The Glenrothes Vintage Reserve comprises of 10 different vintages which span the last three decades, they are 1989, 1992, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. Technically if this was to carry an age statement you then it would carry the age of the 2007 Vintage which would be 7 year old but there is some mature 25 year old Glenrothes in there also which should make this a very interesting single malt

The Glenrothes say that combination of the different Vintages aged in a variety of casks has created a balanced whisky with mature experience and vibrant youth: the most venerable constituent (a full 25 years old) is Vintage 1989, bringing mellow oak and dried fruits; the greatest proportion is a 16 year old Vintage 1998, adding soft, mature, sweet vanilla; the more youthful vintages add exuberance and lemon citrus notes.

Malt master, Gordon Motion has chose the casks using character and flavour as his guide, not a pre-determined age. Motion’s flavour notes appear on the front label: "Mellow, soft fruits, citrus and honey".

Ronnie Cox, The Glenrothes brand heritage director, states: "Unlike other malts that bottle by age, we choose whiskies that represent the best of a particular year and marry them together when they are ready. Whisky enthusiasts want to know what they are buying and, as ever, we are happy to oblige by being open and transparent about the 10 Vintages assembled together for Vintage Reserve, our most complex reserve to date."

The Glenrothes Vintage Reserve will initially launch in Taiwan initially in November 2014 and will be rolled out worldwide next year. Bottled at 40% ABV the Glenrothes Vintage Reserve has a RRP of TW$1,200 which is is £25 per 70cl bottle, hopefully it will be £25 when it is rolled out here in the UK but I suspect it may be a little more.
