Glen Moray
Cider Cask Project small batch release
is the first release from Glen Moray's
new Elgin Curiosity Range.
Glen
Moray Distillery has announced the
launch of the Glen Moray Cider Cask
Project, a small batch single malt
whisky expression and the first release
from the new Glen Moray Elgin Curiosity
Range.
The new
Glen Moray Elgin Curiosity Range
is the creative work of Glen Moray's Master Distiller, Graham Coull.
Graham's passion for experimentation and
his desire to push boundaries in the
world of whisky is what has lead to this
Cider Cask finished whisky. Technically
the use of cider casks to produce Scotch
whisky is not permitted under the Scotch
Whisky Association guidelines which
requires that only traditional oak casks
should be used to mature Scotch whisky.
So to stay within these guidelines
Graham got together with Thistly Cross
Cider, one of Scotland’s most highly
awarded cider brands. The partnership
began five years ago when Graham Coull first tasted Thistly Cross
Cider and saw the potential for a
fruitful collaboration. Glen Moray
loaned the cider makers some of their
single malt oak whisky casks to create their
Thistly Cross Whisky Cask Cider which is
now distributed in over 20 countries
worldwide. In return, Graham wanted to
see what their vintage cider could bring
to the whisky. The casks used to create
the Thistly Cross Whisky Cask Cider were
then returned to Glen Moray where they
were used to finish this new Glen Moray
Cider Cask Project whisky.
The new Glen Moray Cider Cask Project is
the result of the collaboration with
Thistly Cross Cider but not quite the
first cider cask finished whisky from
Glen Moray, those of you who were lucky
enough to visit the Glen Moray
distillery back in 2016 may recall a
distillery exclusive Bottle Your Own
single cask Glen Moray 10 year old 2006
Cider Cask Finish, well that single cask
was part of the same experiment and
similar to the Glen Moray 10 year old
2006 Cider Cask Finish this new Glen
Moray Cider Cask Project was matured in
1st Fill Bourbon barrels before being
finished in ex Glen Moray casks which
had been used by Thistly Cross Cider to
mature their Whisky Cask Cider.
The distillery describe the Glen Moray’s
Cider Cask Project as an "incredibly
light and fresh whisky with caramelized
apple notes from the cider casks which
mix perfectly with the intense vanilla
flavours found in all Glen Moray Single
Malt Whiskies".
Although the new Glen Moray Cider Cask
Project has no age statement, Graham
tells me that it is a "combination of of
2007 and 2008 Glen Moray", making it
around 10 year old, the same age as the earlier
distillery bottle your own expression,
it has been bottled at 46.3% ABV and is
non chill-filtered and is a UK exclusive
limited release of 2,000 bottles.
Graham Coull commented: "We are all very
excited at Glen Moray Distillery about
the launch of Glen Moray’s Cider Cask
Project Whisky and The Elgin Curiosity
Range. As Master Distiller of this
historic distillery, I am keen to
constantly evolve and create new
whiskies which showcase the quality and
breadth of whiskies which we can
produce, reinforcing our message that
Glen Moray is The Gateway to Flavour."
The Glen Moray’s Cider Cask Project has
a RRP of £54.99 and is exclusively
available from
The Whisky Exchange until the end of
this month and thereafter it should be
available from other specialist
online whisky retailers such as
Master of Malt

Nose: Toffee apple and
candy floss. Reminiscent of a

Incredibly light and fresh. Summer
fruits accompanied by vanilla ice cream
sprinkled with toasted oats.
Finish: Smooth and satisfying.
Caramelised apple laced with spice mixed
with vanilla fudge, slowly melting on
the tongue.
