Happy
Birthday to the Glen Moray distillery
which first produced whisky on this day

On January 27th, 1897, the same year
Queen Victoria was celebrating her
Diamond Jubilee, the Glen Moray
Glenlivet Distillery Company Ltd was
formed and later that year in the midst
of a whisky boom, on the 13th September
1897, 120 years ago to this very day the
very first drops of spirit ran from
copper stills at the Glen Moray
distillery.
The distillery was originally the Elgin
West Brewery, which opened in 1830, and
produced several local ales up until
almost the turn of the 19th century. In
1897 the brewery was transformed into a
whisky distillery.
120 years on since Glen Moray first
produced whisky we find ourselves once
again in a whisky boom, probably the
biggest whisky boom in the history of
Scotch whisky production and the Glen
Moray distillery of today, particularly
since it moved into the hands of the French
distilling company La Martiniquaise in 2008
has certainly played its part in
offering whisky connoisseurs an
innovative core range of single malts to
suit all tastes and pockets starting with their
easy drinking Glen Moray Classic priced
at only £20.
Master Distiller, Graham Coull commented
on Glen Morays 120 years, saying:
"Each and every one of us appreciates
Glen Moray's rich heritage and we have a
huge respect for the traditions laid
down 120 years ago. By combining age-old
methods with modern techniques, we
believe we have struck the perfect
balance to preserve Glen Moray's
standing among the best of the Speyside
Single Malts."
In celebration of Glen Moray's milestone
birthday, Graham released Glen Moray
Mastery, a special-release whisky
hand-picked from five distinctive
vintages, in April 2017, I was lucky
enough to taste the whisky back in July
which I reviewed
HERE,
and as I said in my review, "An
outstanding quality dram which is very
worthy to mark the distillery's 120th
anniversary."
