The Glenlivet Nadurra Oloroso

2nd May 2014
The Glenlivet expands the Nadurra into a range of different cask experiences.

Fans of the The Glenlivet Nadurra (and I know there are a lot of you, myself included) will be pleased to hear that The Glenlivet is expanding the brand into a range featuring different cask experiences.

The first new permanent addition to the Nadurra range is The Glenlivet Nadurra Oloroso which uniquely is the first major Glenlivet bottling (other than single cask bottlings) in living memory to be matured solely in ex-sherry casks. The Glenlivet Nadurra Oloroso follows on from the success of the recently released and outstanding Glenlivet Guardians Chapter Exotic which was matured in a combination of Ex American and Sherry oak barrels which I am sure gave many fans of The Glenlivet a taste for The Glenlivet with a higher sherry cask influence on the whisky.

As most knowledgeable whisky drinkers already know first-fill, ex-Oloroso sherry casks from Jerez in Spain impart rich, distinctive dried fruits aromas, warm spices, and notes of cinnamon and liquorice. The spirit combined with the cask influence, produces a sweetness of dark chocolate and a finish which is long and sweet with a slightly dry, spicy effect from the European oak maturation.

Unlike the standard Nadurra 16 year old, The Glenlivet Nadurra Oloroso has No Age Statement, I did try to get the age of the new whisky from The Glenlivet but they were revealing nothing. I am sure you are like me and associate an age of 16 years and a natural cask strength with the existing Glenlivet Nadurra, it is a main part of the whisky's appeal to myself and I am sure many of you, after all doesn't Nadurra translate as "Natural" but having said that The Glenlivet have recently proved that age doesn't always matter with the release of the Glenlivet Guardians Chapter Exotic.

The Glenlivet Nadurra Oloroso comes in a 1 litre bottle and has a very decent bottling strength of 48% ABV, it is non chill filtered and it will be introduced to travel Retail Europe in May 2014 via immersive experiences to help travellers gain an understanding of the new whisky’s unique taste profile. The Glenlivet Nadurra Oloroso will be unveiled first at Heinemann Frankfurt airport before launching in London Heathrow Terminal 5 as part of the World Duty Free Whisky Festival 2014.

Nikki Burgess, Global Brand Director for The Glenlivet at Chivas Brothers, commented:

"The Glenlivet Nadurra Oloroso presents a rare opportunity to taste The Glenlivet aged exclusively in ex-Oloroso casks, which we anticipate to be extremely popular with whisky fans and an enticing purchase for travellers in Travel Retail when it launches. As we continue to release additional twists on the original The Glenlivet Nadurra, we look forward to showcasing different cask experiences to an increasing number of discerning drinkers."

Each expression in The Glenlivet Nadurra range will be crafted in small batches using traditional production methods and is matured exclusively in a different cask-type, showcasing the versatility and flawless quality of The Glenlivet spirit. Unlike most modern whiskies, the range is bottled without chill-filtration, which offers the additional complexity, body, and texture of a whisky that has just been drawn from the cask.

The packaging demonstrates the handcrafted nature of Nadurra through prominent batch number and cask-type stamps, an artisanal typeface, an emphasis on the Gaelic translation of Nadurra, and a distinctive handmade finish.

Look out for the striking The Glenlivet spaces created in Frankfurt B-East and London Heathrow Terminal 5 airports where you will be invited to enjoy a dram of the new expression while playing a game of pool thanks to the installation of a miniature pool table in the dedicated brand space. Also look out for the new limited edition single cask expression The Glenlivet Kymah which is available exclusively from Heinemann Duty Free at Frankfurt airport.

Apologies as I don't currently have the RRP on the new Glenlivet Nadurra Oloroso, I did ask for the price but got no reply but I will update you when I find out although I would guess that it will be around the same price as the current travel retail Glenlivet Nadurra 16 year old which is £45. I will be through Glasgow airport a few times this month with any luck I will be able to get hold of a bottle their and update you with the price and more importantly with my opinion of the whisky, meanwhile the official tasting note is below.
