Glenglassaugh Octaves Classic and Octaves Peated Batch 2

9th October 2018
Glenglassaugh announce the release of a second batch of Glenglassaugh Octaves single malt whiskies.

Glenglassaugh Octaves Classic and Octaves Peated Batch 2

I am sure those of you that were lucky enough to have the pleasure of the limited release Glenglassaugh Octaves Classic and Glenglassaugh Octaves Peated back in 2016 when it was launched will be pleased to hear that the Glenglassaugh distillery today announced the release of Batch 2 of the Glenglassaugh Octave cask expressions, Glenglassaugh Octaves Classic and Peated.

Just like the first batch, Glenglassaugh Octaves Classic and Octaves Peated Batch 2 has been matured in smaller octave casks, these casks were constructed using hand-selected octaves, made to size from a range of Bourbon, Pedro Ximénez, Oloroso and Amontillado Sherry and Port casks. The small octave cask, of around 65 litres in size, allows for greater interaction between oak wood and spirit, whilst the North Sea air passes through the coastal warehouses in which the casks reside

Glenglassaugh Octaves Classic Batch 2 has been carefully chosen by Master Blender, Rachel Barrie, combining Bourbon, Pedro Ximénez and Amontillado Sherry Cask Octaves. Waves of tropical fruit sweetness roll on the palate in balance with spiced coffee and an intriguing oak nuttiness. Of natural cask colour, bottled at 44% ABV and non chill filtered with an RRP of £60.

Glenglassaugh Octaves Peated Batch 2, is composed of Glenglassaugh peated malt matured in Bourbon, Port and Oloroso Sherry Cask Octaves. Salted caramel and yellow plum sweetness harmonise with savoury smoke and maple syrup, spiced by cask and sea. Also bottled at 44% ABV, of natural cask colour and non chill filtered and with a RRP of £65.

Glenglassaugh Master Blender Rachel Barrie commented: "As the surf rolls in on Sandend Bay and invigorating North Sea air passes through our coastal warehouses, these two luscious malts are truly a distillation of nature’s elements. Shaped by the rich abundance of land and sea, this fresh duo of Glenglassaugh Octaves encapsulate rolling waves of flavour that intensify and evolve with each and every sip.

"Glenglassaugh Octaves Classic and Peated Batch 2 are jewels in this elemental distillery’s journey, which I hope you will savour to the full."

You will also find the Glenglassaugh Octave whiskies available from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, The Whisky Shop and Master of Malt

Glenglassaugh Octaves Classic Batch 2 Review

Tasting note added on 25th October 2018. Non chill filtered, with natural colour and bottled at 44% ABV.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Candied apple and strawberry jam, a hint of melon, a little honey and oak.

Taste: Green apple, melon and pineapple lead the fruity charge but fade quickly revealing some lovely gentle honey, vanilla toffee and oak spice.

Finish: The fruits have mostly bowed out, just a hint of pineapple, a little vanilla and honey, some lovely gentle, lingering mildly drying oak spice and a little nuttiness.

Comment: A lovely clean fresh malt, not as sweet on the palate as the nose would have you believe or as sweet as I recall batch 1 being but still a delightful easy drinking single malt.

SMW Score 83/100

Glenglassaugh Octaves Peated Batch 2 Review

Tasting note added on 25th October 2018. Non chill filtered, with natural colour and bottled at 44% ABV.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Vanilla fudge infused with subtle sweet smoke, a little pepper,

Taste: Apricot along with a little raisin leads with a treacle edged sugary smoky sweetness which morphs to caramel.

Finish: Long, with some lovely lingering gentle smoke infused caramel, some late nuttiness.

Comment: What a difference a touch of peat makes, definitely my choice of the two new Glenglassaugh Octaves batch 2, a moreish lightly peated dram with a lovely contribution from the smaller octave casks it has matured in. I would suspect that there was perhaps more sherry cask staves that went into the construction of the octaves for this Peated expression than went into the the octaves for the Classic expression, a combination which has made for a very enjoyable dram.

SMW Score 90/100
