Introducing
Glenfiddich Winter Storm 21 year old
which has been finished in unique Peller
Estates Icewine casks

Glenfiddich
Winter Storm 21 year old single malt is
the third release in the Speyside
distillery's Experimental Series which
was launched last year. What makes this
new 21 year old expression experimental
is that it has been finished for six
months in French oak casks which
previously contained Peller Estates
Icewine which is a unique intensely
sweet flavoured wine produced in
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.
What is different about Peller Estates
Icewine is the way it is produced, it is
a rare desert wine produced from the
juice of naturally frozen grapes that
have been picked in the middle of a cold
Canadian winter.
Glenfiddich Malt Master, Brian Kinsman
visited the Peller Estates at
Niagara-on-the-Lake in 2016 and
witnessed the grapes being harvested
by moonlight at less than -10˚C. The
frozen grapes are pressed immediately
after picking, yielding just one drop of
intensely flavourful juice per grape
which goes on to produce an intensely
flavourful Icewine.
It is these French oak casks which
previously contained Peller Estates
Icewine that Brian Kinsman has chosen to
finish this latest addition to the
Experimental Series in, but only for six
months.
Kinsman commented on the new Glenfiddich
Winter Ice, saying: "Only the rarer
whiskies, those aged for 21 years, could
cope with the extra ice wine intensity.
"Having more tannins, extracted from
years in oak, these malts brought out a
uniquely fresh lychee note instead of
being swamped by sweetness."
Peller Estates vice president of
winemaking, Craig McDonald, added: "We
go to extreme lengths to produce our
intensely sweet ice wine and are always
looking for ways to push the boundaries
of taste, so I was intrigued to see how
it could be used to create a new,
unexpected whisky.
"The resulting liquid is a unique
combination of the warming soul of
whisky and the frozen cold of ice wine."
The new experimental whisky joins the
existing Experimental Series line up
which were launched last year, the
Glenfiddich IPA Experiment and Project
XX.
Glenfiddich Winter Storm is bottled at
43% ABV and is described as lusciously
sweet, it is presented in a white
ceramic bottle and embossed presentation
box. It will be priced around £199 and
will be released in two batches, the
first batch in October 2017 followed by
the 2nd batch in March 2018.
