The GlenDronach Peated Port Wood Review

13th November 2017
GlenDronach announce the release of new NAS Peated Port Wood finish whisky.

The GlenDronach Peated Port WoodThe GlenDronach distillery have announced the release of the GlenDronach Peated Port Wood.

The new no age statement Port Wood finished whisky is the creation of GlenDronach Whisky Maker, Rachel Barrie, an example of Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, made in the ‘old style’, from malted barley dried with Highland peat.

The peated whisky has undergone a final maturation in port pipes, sourced from the Douro Valley in Portugal, which were hand-selected and expertly combined by Rachel to create this seasonal expression.

I am sure those of you that have had the pleasure of GlenDronach's outstanding, deliciously juicy, 15 year old or 18 year old Tawny Port expression which replaced the 15 will find this of great interest.

Rachel Barrie commented on the new whisky, saying: "The GlenDronach Peated Port Wood may be considered a surprising expression from this distillery but in keeping with historical styles. Peat imbues the spirit with regional notes of wood smoke and smouldering charcoal, layered over The GlenDronach’s archetypal fruitiness."

The GlenDronach Peated Port Wood is bottled at 46% ABV, non chill filtered and of natural colour, it has an RRP of £65 - £70 and will soon be available from specialist online whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose:  Ripe raisins, just a hint of orange and cinnamon, vanilla all brushed with a little pepper and a very gentle touch of sweet smoke.

Taste: A juicy ripe raisiny fruitiness leads closely followed by lovely sweet honeyed smoke, just a touch of candied orange and a little peach.

Finish: The honeyed smoke becomes more ashy before fading, a touch of pepper and mildly drying oak bitters out.

Comment: A gentle nose, the lovely gentle Highland smoke is more pronounced on the palate where it compliments the juicy Port wood fruitiness. An enjoyable easy drinking GlenDronach.

SMW Score 85/100
