Douglas Laing
release 2nd of 4 XOP Platinum bottlings
to mark their 70th Anniversary year,
this time it is a Port Dundas 40 year
old 1978 vintage single cask, single
grain whisky.

As Glasgow based whisky bottler and
soon to be maker Douglas Laing continues
their year of 70th anniversary
celebrations they have unveiled their
second Xtra Old Particular Platinum
bottling, this time a single grain
whisky which was produced at the now
closed Port Dundas distillery in
Glasgow.
The XOP Platinum series has been
specially commissioned to mark the
Glasgow firm’s 7 decades in the Scotch
Whisky industry with one very rare, aged
Single Cask being released each quarter
of 2018. This Douglas Laing XOP Platinum
Port Dundas is the second release in
this special anniversary series, a 40
year old, 1978 vintage, single cask,
single grain whisky which was rather
appropriately produced in a Glasgow
distillery.
The family firm’s father and daughter
duo Fred and Cara Laing, who have
selected each of the four Single Casks
tell me that the Port Dundas bottling
has been bottle at natural cask
strength, 59.1% ABV, which is a very
impressive strength after 40 years
maturing in the cask. As you would
expect from DL it is naturally coloured
and nonchill-filtered. DL tell me that
it is "absolutely bursting with
gingerbread spicy sweetness, dark fruits
and home baking".
Presented in premium packaging which
echoes the specialist nature of the
spirit it houses with a moleskin hinged
box while each and every label, and
accompanying certificate, is hand-signed
and individually numbered by both Fred
and Cara.
Fred Laing, Douglas Laing’s Chairman,
comments: "Back in the 1970’s,my father
probably anticipated this cask of Port
Dundas packing a 12 Years Old blend, so
all those years later, it’s great to see
and taste it being bottled as part of
our, really his, Platinum Anniversary
series."
A bottle of the XOP Platinum series will
be released each quarter of 2018. The
collection launched with an
XOP Ardbeg 25 Year Old in
March which as you can imagine proved to
be very popular and was immediately
changing hands for higher than its
original launch price with even Douglas
Laing getting in on the act, raising the
price in its own online shop soon after
its launch. The Port Dundas 40 Year Old
(70cl) is the second release, a release
of 168 bottles which will be
available from June with an RRP of £350
You will find the Douglas Laing Platinum anniversary bottlings as
well as their current whisky range available
from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange
and
