Whisky Focus - Compass Box Delilah’s Limited Edition

Compass Box Delilah’s

29th August 2013
Another innovative limited edition whisky from Compass Box.

The innovative folks at Compass Box today unveiled Compass Box Delilah’s a limited edition Scotch blended whisky to mark the anniversary of the legendary Chicago punk rock whisky bar which has been voted many times "Best whisky bar in America". Delilah’s celebrates its 20th birthday today 29th August and to mark the occasion Compass Box founder and whisky maker John Glaser and Delilah’s owner Mike Miller got together to create this special limited edition whisky.

So what is Compass Box Delilah’s? It is a combination of single malt and single grain whiskies aged in a mix of experimental new American oak barrels and rejuvenated American oak hogsheads which give the whisky a delicious sweetness. John and Mikes aim was to create a unique style of whisky that would accompany a beer.

Bottled at 40%, Delilah’s has an intense richness yet is subtly complex with honeyed and seductive fruity notes and hints of cereals and vanilla cream.

As Mike Miller said, "Everyone who comes to Delilah’s knows you can drink your whisky any way you like. It’s a mutual perspective John Glaser and I share that inspired our collaboration," said Mike Miller, owner of Delilah’s. I have a deep appreciation and respect for John’s philosophy and talents and am honoured to mark twenty years of combining great music and great whiskies with a Compass Box whisky blended uniquely for us and our community."

"Mike wanted a Scotch whisky that, in his words, ‘thinks it’s a Bourbon,’ so we sourced some single malts aged in new American oak hogsheads, something that’s very hard to find in Scotland," said John Glaser.

The result is a Scotch with a big, luscious vanilla-oak character that has echoes of Bourbon flavour. This makes it dangerously easy to drink neat and perfect served as a shot with a beer—the way a lot of whisky is enjoyed at Delilah’s!

Compass Box tell me that the blend is made up of approximately 50% malt whisky from the towns of Alness (could be Teaninich or The Dalmore) and Longmorn and the other 50% of the blend is grain whisky from Fife (Cameron Bridge perhaps).

Only 6,324 bottles of this eponymous craft Scotch whisky will be available in select markets worldwide – 4,800 of them in the US - following its debut in Delilah’s bar in Chicago today 29th August 2013. From tomorrow Delilah’s will be available in the UK, then also in France, Germany, Holland, Spain, Belgium, Taiwan, China, Canada and Puerto Rico over the next couple of months. Priced around £52
