Bowmore The
Devil's Casks, a spellbindingly rich
dram.
Bowmore
has announced the launch of The Devil’s
Casks – a devilishly delicious dram
which has been matured exclusively - and
unusually - for 10 years in the finest
first fill sherry casks. Bowmore tell me
that this non chill-filtered, small
batch release which has been bottled at
56.9% ABV is bursting with Bowmore’s hot
and fiery characteristics, deep mahogany
colour and rich fruitcake flavour.
Created to celebrate one of Islay’s most
famous tales - a story shrouded in myth
and legend - 6,000 bottles of The
Devil’s Casks will be released in
October, appropriately just in time for
Halloween.
It is said that the round shape of the
church of Bowmore which I am sure any of
you who have visited Bowmore on Islay
will have come across was created to
prevent the devil from hiding in a any
corners. The story goes that the Devil
was spotted in the round church
of Bowmore and chased by the local
congregation down into the No. 1 vaults
at the Bowmore distillery. Here, as the
warehousemen were filling casks and
loading them aboard the paddle steamer
(The Maid of Islay) the devil was lost.
It is believed he escaped in a cask of
Bowmore bound for the mainland.
The devil is in the detail when it comes
to packaging for this delectable treat –
the perfect addition to any whisky
connoisseur’s collection. A deep red box
tells the story of the legend alongside
smoke illustrations and a Devil’s
pitchfork suggesting the Devil himself
isn’t far away!
Bowmore’s Master of Malts Iain McCallum
commented, "Ten year’s maturation in
first fill sherry casks has brought out
Bowmore’s fiery characteristics. The
notes in this dram are hot and
seductive. This small batch release is
quite simply, devilishly good!"
6,000 bottle of the Devil’s Casks has
been released worldwide of these there
will be 540 bottles in the UK priced at
£50.99 RRP which is a great price for a
unique small batch release bottled at
56.9% ABV. Get it while you can as I
don't think this one will be on the
shelves for long.
Bowmore The Devil’s Casks is available
from October.

Bowmore The Devil's Casks Tasting
Notes
|
William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Colour:
Dark rich amber.
Nose:
Wonderful dark fruits, touch of orange,
toffee, nutty, Dundee cake Just a subtle
touch of Bowmore's classic mild sea-salt
peatiness in the background.
Taste:
Dark chocolate orange coated brandy
dipped burnt raisins and sultanas. Ripe peach, spiced
vanilla toffee and a touch of cinnamon
and dry ginger. As on the nose, just a
subtle touch of mild sea-salt peatiness
to remind you where this whisky came
from.
Finish:
Long, mildly drying. Dark chocolate,
coffee, raisins, some sweet spice all
lightly brushed with a deliciously mild
Bowmore peat smoke.
Comment:
Loved it! Bowmore just seem to get
better and better at these limited
editions. Undoubtedly this one is for
those who like the big sherried drams
and this one is a cracker. The
classic Bowmore sea-salt peatiness
becomes more apparent with each
mouthful. I for one will be picking up a
couple of bottles of this big sherried
devil next month when it is released, an
ideal dram for those fast approaching
cold winter nights. Amongst the best new
whiskies for your money that I have
tasted this year.
