Bowmore Tempest Batch 3 Review

27th October 2011

Bowmore unveils Bowmore Tempest Small Batch release No.3

I first tasted the Bowmore Tempest at The Whisky Show London in 2009 and then went straight out and bought myself a bottle. The 2nd batch was equally as impressive as the first batch.

Now Bowmore have launched the Bowmore Tempest Small Batch Release No. 3. This third batch just like the two that came before it is non chill-filtered and has been aged for 10 years in first-fill bourbon casks and this one was bottled at 55.6% ABV.

It is a limited edition release with only 1,850 cases available worldwide. It has an RRP of £49.99 in the UK but if you head over to The Whisky Exchange you will find it is currently only £40.95, which is a great price for a limited release of this quality.

Whilst each batch of Tempest has delivered citrus notes on the nose and palate, and a long and fresh finish, they each possess subtle yet distinct nuances, giving each one a slightly different style and character. And the latest release is no different; the Bowmore Tempest Batch 3 releases bursts of oranges, followed by a sea-salt tang, whilst retaining Bowmore’s unique quality – perfect balance. With its signature rich, warm, smoky flavours enhanced from maturation in the Distillery’s legendary No.1 Vaults, Scotland’s oldest maturation warehouse, the Tempest 3 is a complex yet rewarding expression.

Cara Laing, Bowmore Brand Manager, comments: "We’ve released a small batch of Bowmore Tempest annually since 2010 to great response. Every batch is slightly different but always reflects Bowmore’s raw spirit – it’s like tasting a dram straight out of a first fill bourbon cask in our No.1 Vaults. We recommend enjoying it with a little rich, dark chocolate to release the sweetness and depth of the spirit."

Personally I am not into this pairing whisky with chocolate especially not this one, as I simply just want to savour its original unadulterated flavour without any chocolate enhancement but if you enjoy it with a piece of chocolate then why not.

You will be pleased to hear that Bowmore has told me that the Bowmore Tempest Small Batch Release No.4 will be released in 2012.

Bowmore Tempest Batch 3 Tasting Notes

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose:  Like a fresh sea breeze mixed with sweet orange marmalade, vanilla and a touch of lavender. A lovely gentle salty smoke.

Palate: Medium to full bodied. Tangy orange, a bit of spice, hint of raisins and a lovely Demerara sugar sweetness all coated in a gentle peat smoke.

Finish: Long. A touch drying but then the the orange zest and some lovely gentle peat smoke and vanilla sweetness which hangs around to the end.

Comment: Fantastic, another cracking gentle coastal dram from Bowmore. Excellent balance between the peat smoke, citrus and vanilla, I loved it another top rate Bowmore Tempest, keep them coming!

SMW Score 90/100
