Bowmore
launch the 5th and final Black Bowmore
from the last of their now famous 1964
stock.

Bowmore have launched the 5th and final
edition of it famous 1964 Black Bowmore
collection, the Black Bowmore 50 Year
Old The Last Cask, which will set you
back a cool £16,000 if you want to get
your hands on a bottle.
The
first Black Bowmore 1964 was launched
back in 1993 and was available from the
UK high street off licence chain store
Oddbins for what now seems like an
unbelievable price of £79.99, yes that's
correct I said £79.99. The first release
was followed by a 2nd bottling in 1994, if
I recall correctly the price rose to £93
and by the time of the 3rd release in
1995 the price had surpassed £100 which
believe it or not at that time was
considered a lot for even a premium
whisky of this quality and maturity. How
things have changed!
It
then went quiet for 12 years as far as
new releases of Black Bowmore went, but
in that 12 years Scotch single malt
whisky had reached popularity levels
which it had never before experienced in
its history. Scotch single malt whisky
was now recognised for its quality and
rare older bottlings which were highly
rated such as Black Bowmore became very
highly sought after by connoisseurs and
collectors, prices soared, in fact they
haven't stopped soaring.
The
Black Bowmore 4th edition was launched
in 2007, by this time earlier releases
were now changing hands for between
£2000 - £2500 and you had to pay a
similar price to get your hands on the
4th edition of Black Bowmore which was
made up of five Oloroso sherry hogsheads
which were mixed together, only 827
bottles were released. The whisky from
two of those casks was then mixed
together and left to mature until 2014,
when they were bottled for this release
which for some mysterious reason has
taken 2 years to appear on the shelves.
As
we have now come to expect for these
rare premium releases from Bowmore the
5th and final edition of the famous 1964
Black Bowmore collection, the Black
Bowmore 50 Year Old The Last Cask is
presented in a stunning bottle, handmade
using traditional glassblowing
techniques by Glasstorm, a Scottish
Highlands based workshop. The Scottish
oak cabinet which contains the bottle
was made by Glasgow cabinet maker John
Galvin Design and features silver inlays
modelled on tree rings.
The
Last Cask is also Bowmore distillery
manager Eddie MacAffer's farewell after
over 50 years at the Islay distillery.
The 5th Black Bowmore, which was
distilled only 20 months before Eddie
started his career at Bowmore is bottled
at its natural cask strength of 40.9%
ABV, which perhaps explains why it was
hurriedly bottled in 2014 with no plans
to launch it, it was to prevent it
dipping below 40%.
The
Black Bowmore 50 year old The Last Cask is a limited release of
159 bottles worldwide and will
soon be available from specialist online
whisky retailers such as
Master of Malt while stocks
last.
