unveil sherry finished Big Peat's Pals
and a single cask Provenance Caol Ila 6
Year Old for Feis Ile 2017.
Independent
bottler Douglas Laing has unveiled two
special whiskies which they have bottled
for Islay’s Annual Festival of Malt and
Music, Feis Ile 2017. They have put
together a special expression of their
popular Islay blended malt Big Peat
which they have named Big Peat's Pals
Feis Ile 2017. The second limited
release for this years festival is a
single cask bottling, Provenance Caol
Ila 6 Year Old Feis Ile 2017.
"Big Peat’s Pals", is a special release
of the firm’s popular Islay Blended Malt and a
very clever piece of marketing, the tube
it is presented in features the faces of
over 300 fans of the peaty blend from
all over the world which were collated
via a social media competition earlier
this year. Now if you are a whisky fan
and your picture is on the tube it is
almost a certainty that you will want to
purchase at least one bottle.
Big Peat’s Pals was created from a
vatting of the classic Big Peat recipe
which comprises of spirit distilled at
Ardbeg, Bowmore, Caol Ila and of course
the usual bucket load of Port Ellen.
What makes this even more attractive is
that it was finished in Spanish Sherry
butts, the first time an expression of
Big Peat has had a sherry finish, lets
hope it is a good one.
Big Peat’s Pals Feis Ile 2017 has no
colouring or chill-filtration, it is was
bottled 48% ABV and is a limited release
of 1600 bottles which will be available
globally.
The second Douglas Laing offering for
the Feis Ile 2017 is a single cask
bottling, Provenance
Caol Ila 6 Year Old Feis Ile 2017 which
was distilled in November 2010 and
bottled in April 2017 at 50.8% ABV.
From the tasting note on the bottle I am
assuming that it was matured in a
Bourbon cask but it doesn't actually
state the single cask type. The flavour
profile is said to comprise of smoked
meats, bonfire smoke and charred wood,
with a honeycomb sweetness prevailing on
the finish. These Caol Ila malts
bottled young and at high strength can
be exceptional, and I would guess as
this is bottled especially for the Feis
Islay, Fred Laing and his team has
selected something special to
bottle.
Both whiskies will launch during the
Islay Festival but don't worry if you
cant make it to Islay as they will both
