Big Peat
comes of age with the launch of the Big
Peat 25 Year Old Gold Edition.
It
seems Big Peat has come of age, as
Glasgow independent bottler Douglas
Laing, the creative folks behind this
popular peaty Islay Blended Malt whisky
has announced the launch of Big Peat 25
Year Old Gold Edition.
This is the first expression in the Big
Peat series to carry an age statement
and just like the image of the iconic
Big Peat himself which is found on every
bottle this is no young thing but a
mature Islay blended malt whisky of 25
years.
Big Peat 25 Year Old Gold Edition is the
first instalment of a three part limited
edition series which aims to bring to
life the journey of the spirit with each
year that passes. Douglas Laing told me
that Big Peat 25 is a vatting of Islay's
most sought after single malts, when
they announced its release last
week they inititially told me that the
whisky contained, amongst others, those
distilled at Ardbeg, Bowmore and Port
Ellen, which certainly peaked my
interest and my first question was - how
much do you want for it?
Douglas Laing then got back to me with
an updated announcement which removed
any reference to any distillery names,
so I really can't say if there is any
Ardbeg, Bowmore or Port Ellen 25 year
old in the vatting although this info is
already out there following their
initial announcement but I can only
assume by the fact that they withdrew
the declaration of these three
distilleries being in the whisky that
they are NOT in
the whisky. They told me that the price
for the whisky is yet to be confirmed,
but I will update you when I hear the
price.
Although I can't tell you any of the
contributing distilleries in the Big
Peat 25 I can tell you that this first
edition in the trilogy was distilled
back in 1992 and bottled in 2017, it has
been bottled at a cask strength of 52.1%
ABV and is non chill-filtered and is a
limited release of 3000 bottles.
Big Peat 25 will be available from
December in specialist online whisky shops such as
The Whisky Exchange and
Master of Malt

Big Peat 25 Year Old Gold Edition Review
|
Producer's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
A more gentle and mature side of Big
Peat on the nose, with boat varnish,
beachy rock pools and a smoky barbecue
backdrop.
Taste:
The palate opens as sweetly-peated as
ever and warms to later creosote, black
pepper and chimney smoke.
Finish:
The finish displays that same warm depth
of sweet personality before deliciously
damp bonfire ash, coal dust and charred
meat appear.
