Review of the
outstanding BenRiach Sherry Wood 12 Year
Old which makes a very welcome return to the BenRiach core
range.
I
am sure many of you will be pleased to
hear that The BenRiach distillery has
announced that the outstanding BenRiach
12 Year Old Sherry Wood is making a
return to the distillery's core range.
Made using three styles of sherry cask
maturation: full sherry cask maturation,
combined with Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso
sherry cask finishing, the expression
offers layers of fruit sweetness and
toasted oak spice with a luscious
dessert-like finish.
As I said the BenRiach 12 Year Old
Sherry Wood will rejoin the core
collection of BenRiach, which distils
three malt whisky styles - unpeated,
peated and triple distilled - and holds
some of the most experimental casks in
Speyside. The distillery is also one of
only two remaining distilleries in
Speyside to distil whisky using malted
barley from its own on-site floor
malting's, a time-honoured craft
celebrated for one month each year.
Master Blender Rachel Barrie commented
on the return of the whisky, saying:
"BenRiach Sherry Wood Aged 12 Years uses
three-way sherry wood maturation, a
creative approach where each facet is
combined in harmony to deliver a rich
and balanced taste. The result - a
multi-layered Single Malt Scotch Whisky
with notes of fruit cocktail, lilting
spices, honeyed caramel and chocolate
sweetness - an enrichment of BenRiach’s
signature sweet, fruit-laden style.
Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered
and of natural colour, I haven't had the
chance to taste the relaunched
expression but fingers crossed it
matches the quality I remember, which
was a stunning 12 year old sherried
dram. I will certainly update you when I
do get a chance to taste it but
meanwhile the official tasting note is
below.
You will
find the BenRiach 12 Year Old Sherry
Wood along with the rest of the current
BenRiach core whisky range available from

BenRiach 12 Year Old Sherry Wood Review
|
Tasting note added on 15th October 2018.
William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
A juicy inviting nose, orange, raisins,
honey and vanilla toffee.
Taste:
A deliciously smooth sherry rich
delivery of lightly barley sugared,
honeyed raisins and sultanas, lovely
light spices cling to the gentle oils,
some orange and vanilla.
Finish:
Gloriously long, with a warm, honeyed,
mildly sherried, slightly drying
spiciness.
Comment:
This really is a lovely, high quality,
sherried, fruit laden dram. BenRiach
really have sourced some quality Pedro Ximénez
and Oloroso sherry casks for the
creation of this whisky and I am happy
to say that this relaunched expression
is just as good as it ever was and for
its price it is amongst the best core
range whiskies of this style and age.
