Review of The Balvenie
14 year old Peated expression exclusive
to travel retail.
Here
is one for the Balvenie fans amongst you
to look out for on your travels this
summer, the distillery has released The
Balvenie Peated Triple Cask 14 Year Old.
We have seen some Balvenie whisky matured in peated casks
in the past but this is an
actual peated whisky which has been
produced from 100% peated barley, the
specification of the barley being 30 PPM
Phenols. I am sure
that this peat level will get more than a few of you dusting
off your passport as the new whisky joins the
Balvenie's travel retail exclusive
Triple Cask core range.
The Balvenie Peated Triple Cask is the
result of trials undertaken by The
Balvenie’s Malt Master David Stewart MBE
and Ian Millar, former distillery
manager and current Prestige Whiskies
Specialist at William Grant & Sons.
At a time when very few Speyside
distilleries were using peat in
production, The Balvenie distilled a
batch of heavily peated malt, which was
laid down to mature at the distillery in
Dufftown, Scotland under the watchful
eye of the industry’s longest-serving
Malt Master. Since this pioneering
moment, the distillery has dedicated one
week each year, named Peat Week, to
using only peated barley in its
production, in order to craft a
different style of The Balvenie liquid
with enhanced smoky notes, a style of
the Balvenie which the distillery hasn't
produced for over 50 years.
The Balvenie tell me that the result of
the initial experiment is a classic honeyed whisky enriched with a
delicate, sweet and lingering peat smoke
that unlocks flavours unexpected from a
Speyside distillery and showcases The
Balvenie’s truly innovative and
forward-thinking nature.
The Balvenie Peated Triple Cask, a
non-chill filtered expression is bottled at
48.3% ABV and presented in a 70cl bottle, it was was aged in the three most
traditional cask types used in Scotch
whisky production – first-fill
bourbon, refill bourbon and sherry,
which the Balvenie says has resulted in a whisky with exceptional
smoky sweet notes with cinnamon and
ginger spiciness.
The Balvenie Peated Triple Cask 14
Year Old will be a permanent addition to
the distillery's travel retail range, it
will be available from this month with a RRP
of £65. You will also find the current
Balvenie core range available from
specialist online whisky shops such as

The Balvenie 14 Year Old Peated Triple Cask Review
|
Review added 25th
August 2017.
William
Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose: Mild honeyed vanilla
balances well with the sweet malt and just a delicate touch of earthy smoke in
the background.
Taste: Honey and vanilla
coated in a delicious gentle earthy peat
smoke
leads, followed by a little zesty pear,
a lovely raisiny sweetness, pepper and
ginger spice.
Finish: A lovely mix of dried
fruit and peppery spice which slowly fades
leaving the lingering delicate earthy
peat smoke.
Comment: A lovely bit of gentle
mouth coating earthy peat smoke, more
than the nose had let on was to come.
The combination of the first-fill
bourbon, refill bourbon and sherry
casks
to mature the whisky has worked
very well with the peated
Balvenie spirit.
This is no peat monster, I was told
the specification of the malted barley
was 30 PPM Phenols
and I would guess that the PPM for the
final distilled and bottled whisky is
around 10 - 13 PPM. The peat level combined with the
quality of spirit produced at the Balvenie
distillery and the choice
of casks to mature it for 14 years has
resulted in a very good and most importantly very
enjoyable dram. The Balvenie Peated Triple
Cask 14 Year Old is
exclusive to travel retail and is
definitely one to look out for on your
travels.
