Arran Orkney
Bere Barley 10 year old, a taste of
whisky as it used to be.
 Arran
has announced the release of a 2nd
edition of the Arran Orkney Bere Barley
which has been produced through a
collaboration between the Isle of Arran
distillery and the University of the
Highlands and Islands Orkney College.
The first
edition released back in 2012 was
bottled at 8 year old and at 46% ABV but
fans of The Arran Malt will be pleased
to hear that the new Arran Orkney Bere
Barley 10 year old limited
edition has been bottled at cask strength, 56.2% ABV.
The Arran Orkney Bere Barley 10 year old was produced exclusively from Bere barley, Scotland's oldest
cultivated barley, specially grown on
Orkney for this project. Bere barley is
thought to have been
introduced to Scotland over 1000 years
ago by the Vikings
and until the 19th
century Bere Barley was one of the most
important Scottish crops and was widely
grown by farmers and used by millers,
brewers and distillers. Despite being a
fundamental part of Scotland’s
agricultural heritage, the crop is now
only commercially grown on islands off
Scotland’s North and West coasts as it
has been replaced by higher yielding
modern varieties.
Euan Mitchell, managing director of Isle
of Arran Distillers, commented: "We are
one of only a handful of distilleries
that use Bere barley as it is
notoriously difficult to grow. However,
for those who persevere, it can produce
an outstanding malt, as is the case with
this highly-anticipated new release.
"We’re constantly looking for new ways
to interest and excite whisky
aficionados, and as an independent
distillery we have the freedom to try
new things as we have done with the
Orkney Bere edition.
"We are extremely proud to have produced
a whisky which uses a crop that is part
of Scotland’s rich heritage. We are sure
it will thrill and delight those who
taste it."
The new Arran Malt Orkney Bere Barley 10
year old has been matured in ex-Bourbon
barrels and Arran describe it as sweet,
earthy and malty, conjuring up flavours
of ripe honeydew melon and apples with a
finish of vanilla and desiccated
coconut, which work together to showcase
the character of Bere Barley.
As we have come to expect from Arran, the Arran Orkney Bere
Barley 10 year old has no artificial
colouring and is non-chill filtered. A
limited release of 4,890 bottles it will
be available from whisky specialist
shops such as
The Whisky Exchange
from around
the 10th November, with a RRP £59.99.
