anCnoc Cutter

5th September 2014 (updated 15th September)
Introducing anCnoc Cutter the peatiest whisky yet in the anCnoc Peaty Collection.

You may recall back in March this year when anCnoc whisky which is produced at the Knockdhu distillery took a step back in time and released three new limited edition peaty expressions of anCnoc named Rutter, Flaughter and Tushkar. On the 1st September they added another limited edition expression to the peaty collection, anCnoc Cutter.

The launch of the anCnoc Cutter to the Peaty Collection also marks the start of a new anCnoc tradition, every year on the 1st September anCnoc whisky fans will see a new peated expression unveiled.

The peat heads amongst you will be pleased to hear that the Cutter is the peatiest whisky to be released in the collection so far with a phenol content of 20.5 PPM (parts per million). This is the measure of the peatiness of the whisky that is in the bottle, often distilleries like to try to attract the peat heads amongst you by telling you how peaty the malted barley was which was used to produce the whisky but that doesn't tell you how peaty the final whisky is so well done to anCnoc for telling us what we will find in the bottle.

Like the first three releases the Cutter takes its name from a traditional peat cutting tool, the Cutter is a hand tool which is used to cut peat from less wet shallower peat bogs. This means the peat the Cutter reveals is drier and more easily burnt producing a whisky which has a heavy smokiness, in this case 20.5 PPM.

Having been impressed by the first three anCnoc Peaty whiskies which were a superb balance of peat and the more familiar anCnoc sweet fruity light malt style we know I have high hopes for this one. The anCnoc Cutter was matured in American Oak ex bourbon hogsheads and like the other bottles in the series the Cutter is non chill-filtered, natural colour and bottled at 46% ABV.

As I mentioned when the first three anCnoc peaty whiskies where launched in March we may yet see a anCnoc Peaty whisky added to the anCnoc core range in the future as I know anCnoc have been producing a heavily peated spirit since 2004. In 2012 the distillery produced 1.75million litres and 35% of that output was peated production with the specification of the barley being around 45 PPM. Then in 2013 the output was increased to 1.9million litres of which 400,000 litres was heavily peated to 45PPM.

What are they going to do with all that peaty whisky when it comes of age, I think we just may be seeing a peaty anCnoc in the core range in the future or maybe sooner if they run out of names of peat cutting tools. Meanwhile don't forget we will see a new whisky added to the anCnoc Peaty collection every 1st September which is now officially anCnoc Peaty day, mark it in your diary.

anCnoc Cutter is limited to 12000 bottles worldwide and will be available in Canada, Australia, Germany and France to name but a few countries. The UK RRP is £52 and it is now available from the specialist whisky shop The Whisky Exchange

Hopefully it matches up to the three anCnoc Peaty releases in March.

anCnoc Cutter Tasting Notes

William Morrison's Tasting Notes (added 15th September 2014):

Nose: Sweet peat bonfire, vanilla toffee and anCnoc's trademark green apples and pear.

Taste:  Delicious creamy vanilla coated in what I now recognise as anCnoc's lovely sweet peat smoke. Green apples, zesty orange peel, tobacco and mild oak spice.

Finish: A lovely long lingering finish. Sweet peaty oak spice and vanilla with some lovely mild zesty orchard fruits.

Comment: This is the anCnoc Flaughter with the peat turned up with brilliant results. I will tell you what, if anCnoc turn the peat level up any higher they will be competing with the best peated whiskies that Islay has to offer. If you like a peated whisky then this wont disappoint. Whoever decided to start producing heavily peated whisky back in 2004 needs a pat on the back, another quality dram from anCnoc, keep them coming.

SMW Score 92/100
