Georgie Bell
unveils new Mortlach range to Eastern
Canada in Toronto and Stuart Brown
presents a selection of Diageo's premium
whiskies.
Vintages Fine Wine and Spirits hosted
a much awaited evening event at the
Shangri La Hotel Toronto on January 20,
2015 which I attended. The cocktail and
food reception prior to the structured
tasting session was impressive and
enjoyable. One hundred and twenty-seven
guests attended with a broad range of
whisky knowledge. The event was called
An Evening of Scottish Virtuosity. In
addition to raising the curtain to
showcase the new Mortlach range of
single malts, there was also a
structured tasting for some other
expressions in the Diageo repository
including John Walker and Sons Odyssey,
Glen Ord 30 Year and The Singleton of
Glendullan 38 Year which were most
impressive.
Georgina
(Georgie) Bell also known as Miss
Mortlach is the Luxury Malts Ambassador
for Mortlach and is currently travelling
the world to unveil the Mortlach line of
official bottlings which include
Mortlach Rare Old, Mortlach 18 Year Old
Single Malt and Mortlach 25 Year Old
Single Malt. She recently travelled to
British Columbia Canada to present the
line out West and then ventured to
Toronto to present these expression to
Eastern Canada. I believe her next stop
is China.
Georgie’s extensive whisky knowledge,
lovely personality and wit added to the
proceedings this night. She
characterized the Mortlach brand as
"rich, meaty, voluminous and savory, the
beast of Dufftown".
There have only been nine official
bottlings of Mortlach before this new
line. The Mortlach distillery is located
in Dufftown, Moray, Scotland, founded in
1823 by Douglas Findlater. This Speyside
distillery is owned by Diageo. Mortlach
has a complicated and unique
distillation process which commentators
have described as 2.81 distilled.
Mortlach distills their whisky with
several methods which culminates in
being distilled 2.81 times. The whiskies
are presented in bespoke bottles
specially designed for the new range and
harken back to the days of George Cowie
who took over in 1850.
Stuart Brown, Scotch Ambassador, a
storehouse of whisky knowledge and
humorous presenter carried out
structured tasting this night with the
guests and covered five scotches ranging
in price points from $99.90 to $1,999.95
Canadian dollars. Since most folks are
familiar with Johnnie Walker Blue (a
well-known premium blend) and Talisker
Storm, I will present my taste notes for
three deluxe malts.
