Port Ellen distillery was built in 1825
by Alexander Mackay. It was bought by
John Ramsey in 1836. Under John Ramsey Port
Ellen was the first distillery to export
whisky to America. It was acquired by
the Port Ellen Distillery Company in
1920. It was then taken over by DCL in 1927 and
then mothballed by them in 1929. The distillery reopened
again in 1967 and the number of stills
where doubled from 2 to 4.
In
1973 a
malting was built next to the
distillery. This malting still operates
today and produces malt for most of the distilleries
on Islay as well as the Isle of Jura distillery. The distillery was acquired by UDV and
in 1983 it was mothballed as it was surplus to requirements as
UDV already owned the Caol Ila and
Lagavulin distilleries on
Islay.
The stillhouse
was demolished in 2003 so it almost
certain that the Port Ellen distillery
will never produce malt whisky again.
There has been 9 official releases of
Port Ellen malt since 2001 which have
been very popular amongst malt whisky
connoisseurs. If you have ever wanted to
try Port Ellen malt whisky do not leave
it too long as bottlings get rarer as
time goes by. It may even prove to be a
good investment as bottles have
performed very well at auction, with an 1891
bottling selling £11,000.
