The North Port distillery was founded in
1820 by David Guthrie a local farmer. In
1893 the distillery became a limited
company by the name of Guthrie, Martin &
Co which was a partnership of family and
bankers. It remained a family run
distillery until it was taken over by
DCL in 1922. Between 1928 and 1937 and
during World War II the distillery lay
silent. Following the war production was
continued up until 1983 when the
distillery was mothballed. Sadly in 1990
it was sold for property development and
is now the location of a supermarket.
This malt is sometimes known as
North Port Brechin, Brechin being the
city where the distillery was located. Sadly,
this once great distillery will never
distil again, and bottlings of North
Port are becoming hard to find. So if
you ever wanted to try North Port whisky
don't leave it too long.
