Whisky Focus - Johnnie Walker Platinum Rebranded As Johnnie Walker Aged 18 Years

Johnnie Walker Aged 18 Years

23rd March 2017
Johnnie Walker Platinum Label rebranded as Johnnie Walker Aged 18 Years.

Johnnie Walker Aged 18 YearsIt appears that Johnnie Walker are once again focusing on age statements following there move to rebrand the Johnnie Walker Platinum Label blend as Johnnie Walker Aged 18 Years but fans of the whisky needn't worry as this is just a change of name, the whisky in the bottle is still the same.

I have to say that this is a very sensible move to highlight the maturity of this whisky which is a blend of up to 18 different whiskies from the main producing regions in Scotland. 18 years has long been considered a key age recognised by whisky drinkers as the age that many whiskies begin to peak, so in theory a creative quality blend of 18 year old whisky should be amongst the best whiskies available and that fact should be emphasised to the consumer. Johnnie Walker describe it as "the best 18 year old blend ever made by Johnnie Walker", and so it should be and hopefully it is considering the selection of single malt whisky distilleries JW has to choose from.

Jim Beveridge commented on the Johnnie Walker Aged 18 Years, saying: "I find older whiskies fascinating to work with. The great whiskies Iíve selected for this blend have undergone a slow, easy maturation through at least 18 cold winters and warm summers. Itís a long time to wait but these whiskies have a wonderful balance.

"I have chosen up to 18 different whiskies with remarkable flavour and character, including classic Speyside malts, such as Cardhu, Glen Elgin and Auchroisk for their sweetness and elegance; fruity and complex Highland Malts including Blair Athol and beautifully aged Island malts that enable me to introduce such a subtle smokiness."

Johnnie Walker Aged 18 Years is bottled at 40% ABV and will be available for around £65 from specialist online whisky retailers such as Master of Malt. There will also be a 1 litre version available in travel retail.
