The GlenDronach Traditionally Peated Review

6th December 2019
Review of the new GlenDronach Traditionally Peated.

The GlenDronach Traditionally PeatedThe GlenDronach distillery which is better known for its unpeated sherry cask maturation style recently announced the release of a new peated expression, The GlenDronach Traditionally Peated.

The GlenDronach Traditionally Peated is the creative handiwork of the GlenDronachs Master Blender Dr. Rachel Barrie, Rachel has crafted The GlenDronach Traditionally Peated from a marriage of peated spirit which has matured in a combination of Pedro Ximénez, Oloroso sherry and port casks, using the same principles laid down almost two hundred years ago at the distillery when it was traditional practice in the Highlands to burn peat in the kiln towards the end of the barley malting, creating a rich and warm, earthy smoke.

Master Blender, Dr. Rachel Barrie commented on the new peated expression saying: "The GlenDronach Traditionally Peated offers connoisseurs a rare opportunity to explore the distillery’s rich depths of sherry cask maturation, whilst paying homage to the robust peat-smoked earthy character of the early 19th century, that James Allardice himself would likely have enjoyed. This wonderfully complex Single Malt presents notes of Highland toffee, dark honey and coal-smoked barley. Burnt orange and treacle glide over the palate, on a base of cloves and smoked bramble. Liquorice and dark fruits linger and intensify into the rich and earthy finish."

Bottled at 48% ABV and as is the case for all The GlenDronach expressions, is non-chill filtered and naturally coloured over time from the Spanish oak in which it resided.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A gentle nose with sweet vanilla toffee and honey infused with a equally gentle peat smoke

Taste: The toffee is now darker (burnt sugar) and more treacled with a spicy orange edge and all in fused with a lovely gentle earthy peat smoke which has a liquorice edge.

Finish: The earthy peat smoke and gentle spices stand out on the finish and linger on for an age, there is some very gentle sherried fruit lurking in the background.

Comment: It is certainly a different GlenDronach, I suspect it isn't that old, it could have benefitted from more good sherry matured peated whisky in the mix. I would guess that it is supposed to replace the old GlenDronach Peated, it is certainly different to it and as I said I it would have benefitted from being heavier sherried and more heavily peated, still an very enjoyable dram as it is.

SMW Whisky Score 82/100
