I never usually add any water to my Whisky if drinking at home.
If I am at a tasting or trying a Whisky for the first time, I believe that its very important to try it with a touch of water to see what it reveals. _________________ www.abbeywhisky.com

I always add a touch of water to a cask strength whisky as the high alcohol level tends to numb my sense of taste after a few mouthfuls, thus spoiling my enjoyment of the whisky.
I never feel the need to add any water to a 40 - 46% abv whisky i feel this lessens my enjoyment of the whisky.

I am like you Calder, I would always add a bit to a cask strength whisky but for a 40 - 46% i do not normally add any water.

I go with Sylas and Calder here. I think that you do need a splash with a cask strength. However for most whiskies it simply isn't necessary and dilutes the pleasure as well as the tastes. However, each to their own and the right way is always your own way. |

I always have to add a drop to a cask strength whisky as without it my taste buds a very quickly overwhelmed by the strength of the alcohol. I never feel i need to add anything to a 40 - 46% abv whisky in fact i think reducing the alcohol level in these anymore tends to dull the whisky.

I would sometimes add a splash just to see what it reveals but not very often.

I wouldn't say I 'add' water but merely rinse out the glass and tip away so there are literally just a couple of drops remaining.
If the whisky is stronger than 43% I might double the water content but it's still VERY minimal |

I quite often add just a drop of water just to bring the alcohol down a touch. |

I voted 'always', but if it's a 40% bottle then I only add literally 4-5 drops and maybe just a few more for 43%-46%. Obviously if cask strength I probably add one part water to two parts whisky |

I would say "never add water" but I have had a couple of cask strength whiskies above 55% which have needed a drop or two to bring the alcohol down a tad and release hidden characteristics.
So never say never :D

NO WATER in my dram, you just got to use smaller sips for stronger drams! even 57 degrees cask strenght is really good w.o. watering. well, your organism will water it anyway, doesnt it? take a small sip, spead it around your tongue, and start feeling tastes emerging as alcohol fades away, one by one |
