I never add any water. As already mentioned here, I think adding water to whisky dilutes it and kills more flavour than it reveals.

I agree maltman. i think whisky loses more than it gains by adding water.

Only sometimes do i add a touch of water and usually only to cask strength whisky just to bring the ABV down a little so as it doesnt numb my senses.

I voted no as i almost never add water to my whisky but i have done on very rare occasions with cask strength whiskies.

Like you I mostly add water to the cask-strength malts after the initial sip. This sma' sip enables me to find the details and notes of the dram. After that I add about a 1/4 of spring water to my drinks. Wink
If the dram is 40% I do not add water, however once in a while I drink a "long drink" of blended whisky (there are very good ones too), than a add about 1/2 sring water with my drink (ideal on a lovely afternoon in the garden) Not many this year !

Adding ice to your whisky will only reduce the temperature of the whisky, freezing its aroma and the smell. The aroma and smell to me are the most important part of a single malt. Ice simply kills a whiskies unique character. If you are adding ice to create a cool refreshing drink then use a blended whisky, using a single malt would is such a waste.

Having said that there is no wrong way to drink any whisky, the right way is the way you best enjoy it.

Well said Alastair, let's hope 'leblanc' will enjoy the different ways of nosing and tasting great malt drams. Rolling Eyes

Mostly i take it as it comes out the bottle but when trying a whisky for the first time i would add a touch of water to see what it may reveal.

Personaly adding water to whisky adds to the various complex aromas/flavours that are in a Whisky.Be it Malt/Blend or otherwise
What I would never do is add TAP WATER Evil or Very Mad as more often than not it has chlorine added. If you have a good clean supply of spring water thats the way to go. Very Happy
There is no wright or wrong way to drink Whisky as long as you enjoy it Top Malt

To say adding water dulls any flavours or aromas is WRONG what happens is it may well release some other unexpexted sensations Razz But never add tap water.

I have always taken my whisky as it comes out the bottle, i wouldnt consider adding anything except a dash of water on the odd occasion to a cask strength whisky.

If you ever had Old Potrero (62,7% )you will dilute it,the alcohol in that specific whiskey doesn`t allow you to get tones,it simply kills your tastebuds.Even one drop of water can open up a whisky so dramatically, yes the taste will get diffrent but it doesn`t mean it is getting worser.Just give it a try with only one drup.

I would add a splash of water to most cask strength whiskies.

I add nothing but whisky to my whisky, lol. Seriously i dont like to dilute down the alcohol level as that is part of the whisky and i would especially not reduce down a 40% abv whisky as it has been reduced enough. Some cask strengths may need a touch of water to reduce its kick but not that mant need water.
