My local store shelves were sorely depleted of my usual selections. I finally resolved to get Laphroaig 10 even though it’s not my favorite. I generally prefer peated sherry bombs. Then I noticed the Select at the same price point. I was looking for a couple of bottles and picked up one of each. Directly comparing them, the 10 was the usual peated medicine with little or no sweetness. The Select had more sweetness that seemed like the spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine go down. Laphroaig traditionally has occupied its own niche in my mind, but the Select seems positioned to compete with other peated offerings from other distilleries and at an attractive price point.

I do enjoy the occasional Laphroaig Select and a decent price, as good as it is I would take the 10, QC, Lore etc. before it given the choice but for its price an enjoyable dram.

I once got told it wasn't all that so it's one I've avoided, but I might have to take a punt on it one day,

It depends what you are looking for from your Laphroaig, Select is a sweeter Laphroaig and I suspect it disappoints some who already enjoy the rest of the Lap[hroaig range.

It's not sweeter, it's just blander, which probably allows the more generic "sweeter" notes of all malts to shine through unimpeded.
If people want a sweeter, friendly Laphroaig, get the Quarter Cask, or just don't bother with Laphroaig altogether and stick to a dram that is better suited to your palate. It's like walking into a Mustang dealership and asking for something slow that handles well... sometimes you just have to accept the nature of the beast. |

I would describe it as a weak Laphroaig, I have only ever had the one bottle which tells you what I think of it, it isnt bad but not what I want my Laphroaig to be.

Right I went to Sainsbury's today to get a bottle of glenfiddich for a friend who's doing me a big favour but while browsing I seen the select and thought ok I will give it a bash, so on the plus side there's peat smoke and some ok sherry notes which works with me, the meaty flavours are present and ok let's be honest , it's ok but it's lacking in punch it's lacking in what most want from a laphroaig, it's a ok for someone tipping there first toe into a islay..

Laphroaig Select is definitely a weaker and less flavorful variation of Laphroaig compared to other offerings from the distillery.
