Benromach 1968 14 year 40% GM Conn/Choice Brown Label

Nose - 88
Similar to shoe polish but not as strong so from that I guess it could be the whiff of OBE, after all it has been in the bottle for 40 years?
Old leather, varnish, dried apricot and the faintest hint of mango and even fainter sweet smoke.
After a few minutes something similar to coal dust, in fairness a dusty old nose sums this one up nicely.

Palate - 90
Quite creamy at first with a load of spice and some peat that was not evident on the nose and just a faint metallic note also in the mix.
There is some sweeter fruit trying to get out, like stewed plum and more apricot but it is held back by the peat and then a little menthol creeps in.
What is good is the balance on show here, nothing dominates.

Finish - 88
It picks up sweetness on the finish with peeper mixing with faint ginger to add the spice angle, there is still a faint metallic note but that is more than compensated by the warmth in your throat as it goes down.

If this was a little sweeter it would be over 90 but it lacks the abv to get there, still a very interesting dram and nothing like the new Benromach they are putting out now profile wise.
In retrospect for only 40% abv, this has enough power to keep you interested, a very good CC bottling.
