Neither of these two casks was an easy whisky style wise, but they were pretty decent nonetheless.
These two casks are better suited to a more seasoned drinker and certainly nothing like the manufactured style of some of todays whisky.
Certainly entertaining for me and an education at the same time.
Caperdonich 1980 25 year 53.1% bourbon cask 7339 Dewar Rattray
Nose - 89
Bags of white pepper to start with, with a little peat but a coastal peat, mixed with brine, reminds me of older, Old Pulteney.
The nose is developing all the time, not a lot of fruit, hint of lemon, green apple, a cereal note, faint hints of perfume.
I like it, but not the easiest nose, you need to give this one time.
Taste - 88
Creamy and very spicy, with pepper and peat combining nicely, there is more peat than the nose suggested.
The fruit is apple and hints of lemon, the profile is a simple one but it works.
A syrupy note creeps in put is swamped by the pepper and peat.
Like the nose you need to work at this to get the best out of it.
With time it gets creamy , the peat is quite evident in this one, not typical of any Caperdonich from any decade.
Finish - 89
The peat and spice keep growing to the end with green fruits in the background.
Certainly not typical for a Caperdonich, pretty peaty this one, I like it.
Tasted with a few drops of water.
Caperdonich 1980 26 year 56.2% bourbon cask 7349 Dewar Rattray
Nose - 88
Even with a little water the nose is restrained not giving much away.
I detect peat, something almost dirty & farmy in character, faint orange, faint mango and Biscoff biscuits.
Taste - 87
Peat and slightly sour green fruit is my first thought but it soon improves.
Masses of pepper, faint caramel note and then a little toffee.
Ginger spice is also present and everything combines well.
The spice note keeps on growing and assaults your tongue but it is entertaining.
Finish - 88
Remaining spicy and peaty until the end, with a medium length.
This one is darker than the 1980 cask 7339 DR.
Tasted with a few drops of water.
This is not an easy malt, or one for a novice, you need tom give it time to get the best out of it.
Good whisky and like cask 7339 not typical style wise for a Caperdonich, cask 7339 was slightly better than this one. _________________ Pour me a glass please. |
