|

Can someone explain why Scotch Whisky is more expensive in the UK then in Europe, the US and even countries like Japan? Some of which even get an extra 5cl in the bottle for a cheaper price? It just feels odd, that even with import/export costs + import tariffs and all that, you can still buy an Ardbeg 10 for less money on the other side of the world? |

The taxes are also high here in Western Canada. Not sure what you are paying, but I haven't found Ardbeg 10 for less than about $110 CAN - roughly €75 or £65. I've seen the Uigeadail for less than that in Seattle. (Uigeadail is over $165 here). |

Good example - Ardbeg 10 currently at £37 in supermarkets in Scotland. _________________ Inverness Whisky

I seem to remember a Canadian friend telling me that imported whisky has quite a high import duty placed on it by the liquor control boards in an attempt to protect the canadian whiskey trade.
When I went to visit he was super grateful for the gift of a balvenie. I thought he was a bit over the top until he took me to the LCBO shop. |

It is certainly bad in Canada. There would be an import tax, an excise tax and most likely other taxes I'm not aware of before the bottle gets on the shelf. Then the consumer pays an additional 10% Provincial sales tax and 5% goods and services tax above the advertised price. - my Ardbeg example includes the final 15% - so the advertised price is just under $100. Rather depressingly expensive. And when we travel out of country, we can't bring back more than 1.14 litres of liqour without paying additional duties/taxes. |

That would be a real test for NIicola Sturgeon if Scotland did gain independence, would they reduced the tax on Scotch, if she did I bet it would be minimal, only time will tell? _________________ Pour me a glass please. |

Er, no. The SNP, who make up less than half of voters, want to leave the UK.
Sorry, couldn't help it.ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ |

Jeez, it was obviously meant as a joke. Can we get back to discussing whisky now? |

|
|
Hi All
I am looking for advice on the best single malt whisky for under £100 for a gift? Most of my dabbling has been with double malt / blended whiskies.
Looking for some recommendations.
Cheers
