Some years ago I designed a dinner party menu with each course matched with different beers instead of serving wine with dinner. It was an interesting and fun exercise. I've been thinking about it recently and wondering about doing another one with single malts matched to dinner instead.
Has anyone tried doing this? Also what other drink would you consider serving alongside? Just water? Beers? Then matching food, whisky and beer could get interesting.
What are peoples thoughts? |

I once saw a video of a guy in America who cooked himself a steak and had it with Lagavulin 16 because apparently that's a well known combination. Looked like a good idea to me, but never actually tried it myself! |

Islay's are great with a charcoal grilled steak or as a digestif after. The Peat, charcoal & beef work well together. Goes with roasted or charcoal grilled chicken too, but not to the same extent as with beef. |

There's loads of whisky/food matching activity going on and I've seen a couple of half/half beer whisky pairings done too.
Whisky can pair well with good chocolate and cheese if you just want to dip a toe in.
BenRiach 20yr was an amazing match with smoked salmon.
Oban Distillers Edition goes well with breaded haggis balls.
Malts.com used to have food pairings up on the website.
My local bar pairs whisky and doughnuts very well and do national delivery - next one is Star Wars themed on May the 4th _________________ Inverness Whisky

High end fish restaurants here (as opposed to just seafood) like McCormick and Schmick's recommend several Lowlands and it seems to start with Auchentoshan Three Wood. |

I agree on the oysters even with sherried whisky it works quite well. I made a steak with a pepper sauce that I topped up with some smokey ardbeg a little while ago, which turned out quite nicely as well. |

Peaty whiskies in my experience go very well with sharp cheese and full-bodied cheese, such as blue cheese. I've done a few whisky evenings where I presented single malts paired individually with different cheeses and chocolates. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

One of my favorite snacks with a late night dram of Islay is a can of nuts or even mixed nuts as long as it's not loaded up with peanuts. |

I have just cooked a very spicy Jamaican dinner and was having a small wee dram of Ardbeg 10 while cooking and WOW the combo of very spicy Jamaican and Ardbeg 10 is a winner for me.
The sweet peaty/smokiness just rounds off the heat from the Scotch bonnets very well |
