Just logged on to Just-Whisky acution which starts today, and what do I see?
Whole cases of Macallan Editions 1 and 2, and also of Arrrrdbeg. Who gets 6-packs of these products? Retailers, thats who.
Just adds credence to my suspicion that some retailers never even put their allocation on the shelf at RRP. They wait until the price rockets and then cash in.
Rant over!

I do agree that there is something suspicious I think the auction houses are in on this and get a cut for selling the whisky on mass or the auctions houses actually get first refusal on bottes and buy them all up and put them on their auction with a % going to the suppliers of the actual profit.

Think about it this way, if auction houses get first refusal and buy all the bottles up then very quickly the bottles are not available to Joe public which fuels the view that the bottles are in high demand.
They are then put out on auction sites and demand goes crazy because buyers think it will be their only chance of getting a bottle so prices are propelled upwards, meaning the auction site makes loads of dosh and the supplier gets a cut of the profit, agreed before hand as a %.

it is not just whisky that do this whiskyauctioneer have loads of the same new bottles, the grand whisky auction also do it.

This is just a conspiracy theory with absolutely no evidence to support it, but, as Uncle Bobby says people are cashing in and it cannot be a coincidence that hundreds of new Macallan offerings etc appear on one auction site.

The whisky industry is eating it's own arsehole in the pursuit of profit, all whisky lovers should say "no more" and refrain from buying anything from auctions for 3-6 months, that would stop this sort of thing, that is no theory by me either that is a dead cert.

I used to spend a silly amount of money at a local independent whisky shop and had access to a lot of bottles before they got a chance to hit the shelf, assume there is a lot of that going on.

I can live with that. Perhaps only fair that loyal customers get first shout.

What about the retailers who host their own auctions? One retailer / auction house recently auctioned a number of Daftmill bottles with sequential numbers!

How dodgy is that?

Thats shocking. I hope Daftmill, and Macallan, Ardbeg, Springbank etc remove that retailer and any others who might be at it from their allocation list.

I have tried that and there is 3 shops near me (well 2 but one is 2 minuets walk from my daughters house..) 2 of them cant even get say the Springbank LB 10 year old, I phoned them over a month ago letting them know I wanted a bottle and they both said we have no chance as the big boys get it all..
The 3rd said they have already sold there allocation and this was 2 months before it is due to be released.

Shocked

I just really wish some of the distilleries would just do a local shop release to help us people that like to shop at the small independent shops..

Unfortunately and sadly that is wishful thinking, nothing gets in the way of making easy money, whether it be retailers, auction houses or private sellers.
Manners cost nothing but the dollar is king, so manners and good decent behavior can take a hike.
