Evening Folks,

I'm just about to pour my Sunday dram and it got me thinking about value and whisky.

The Glencadam 10 I'm about to have is my favourite 'Daily' drinker whisky. It's at the right price point for me (£35-£40), it's 46% non-chill filtered, and it's available to me easily (bought from my local independent drinks shop).

What do you consider a good value whisky? Is the Glencadam good value? Do you prefer a peated whisky in the Ardbeg 10 vein? Is the price point to high or low? Do you live in an area where availability takes precedence?

Of course there are personal circumstances and preferences involved but I was wondering what is your go-to bottle?

Look forward to your thought,

J

For me:

Ardbeg 10
Bunna 12
Clynelish 14
Glenfiddich 12
Glenmorangie 10
Laphroaig Quarter Cask
Redbreast 12

All can be had for around £25-£38 price range if you wait for pretty regular Amazon sales. Glenfiddich 12 and Glenmorangie 10yr are really essential daily drinkers for starters imo, just as solid and dependable as you can get for £26 and under.

Big Shing - What like is the Redbreast 12 compared to a Scottish Malt? My excursion into Irish whisky started and ended with Jameson.
Absolutely agree with your list, great value malts. Have you tired Deanston 12? Another fantastic malt for an agreeable price

MattS - Thanks for these recommendations, I haven't tried that many. The Bunna Stiuireadair is one I always see when looking at that price range but haven't got around to drinking.
What like is the Deanston Virgin? I tried the Benromach Organic version, aged in virgin casks, and I didn't think much of it.

Thanks for this. Interesting to see what someone is currently working their way through.

Tobermory is definitely one of my favourites that I've had over the last year as is Deanston 12.

Anotehr mention of Redbreast...I may have to get a bottle this month!

The Deanston Virgin Oak took me a little to get used to because of the bourbon-ish notes but it's improved with time. I don't think its one I'd rush to replace but it's nice to have it as a sweeter option. I'm yet to try the Benromach Organic in virgin or the Tomatin Legacy but will look to compare one day. I tend to fill a mini and keep it to one side for that purpose.

Well it's different for sure, Irish whisey IMO is much more delicate and kinda fragrant compared to Scotch, but comparing this to Jamesons is a bit like comparing Bunnahabhain 12 to Bells, it's just a big step up in quality. I use Bunna in my comparison there because Redbreast has those rich vanilla/cherry/chocolate sherry-influenced notes you find in Bunna, it's just a really lovely easy sipping dram.

No I've not tried the 12yr old, but I intend to rectify that at some point this year for sure!

Great thread. I can’t afford to spend a lot on whisky, unfortunately. Maybe one day. So price is important to me. I only ever buy the best I can that happens to be on offer at the time. As such, Tesco always have “Clubcard deals”. My latest being Johnnie Walker Black, which was £20 & is excellent. Recently got a Glenlivet Captains Reserve, from Amazon, for £22.50. This is a beauty & represents incredible value for money in my opinion. I aways enjoy seeking out a deal!

Sounds like we're in a similar situation seeking value at a good price.

Ha, definitely! And actually, I like the challenge of finding the best whisky bargain for my budget!

Some great drams on here. Lots of idea's and I was even inspired to nip out yesterday and pick up a Bunna 12.

DylanInYork mentioning Wolfburn made me think that the Wolfburn 'Northland' & 'Aurora' are two more great value malts. I live near the distillery and the prices locally are very reasonable for such a great young malt.

I had the Redbreast 12 a couple of times back in the day and it was lovely stuff, but I'm a bit surprised to find it now at £40.
Maybe just my memory Smile but the Aldi 12 y.o. for Xmas 2019 was just as good, at £24.99 then reduced to £19.99.
