This whisky was put in a large stone flagon and paced in cellar in a Scottish House, it yielded 37 50cl bottles.
Nose
Smells industrial, like a factory workshop but in a good way.
Hints of cooked bacon, dark soy sauce but it is mixed with putty, perhaps that is from the stone flagon this whisky was originally in?
Yes it smells like stir fry veg fried in dark soy sauce, weird but ok.
There is also a definite meat note like air dried beef and there is also a little flint and burnt match note, bot overpowering but it is there, reminds me of the smell when someone is arc welding a little (don`t take that as read as it has been a long time since I smelled that).
With time some dark fruit emerges, mixed with date and prune.
It is really difficult to score this one, I have not smelled anything quite like this before.
Another nosing and I get gravy granules.
Every time I nose this I get something new, an experience for sure but this is defiantly on the meaty side like some of the best heavily sherried Morlachs of old.
Finally French onion soup.
So, it is a little fruity, meaty, industrial
Taste
Bang, powerful and very rich on the sherry front but ever so slight sulphur but it adds to the meatiness of the mouthfeel.
The peat has arrived and it has swamped my tongue but the sherry is fighting it all the way and that is a sign of great balance as the dark fruit is allowed to come out, dark rope plum skins, damson jam that sort of thing.
It seems to get a little sweeter as you go on but the peat is like a sea, waves of it lash your tongue and now there is a slight dark breakfast marmalade note, the really dark marmalade with thick cut rind in it, but not really orange more like something savoury, very difficult to pin down.

The balance shows on the finish, peat, fruit, sherry in complete harmony
The nose is so different to anything I have had in front of me before, it is not brilliant but just so different so 89-90p is fair because the nose is absolutely unique compared to anything else I have nosed, and the only thing that is a little similar are some old heavy sherried Karuizawa.
The palate is nice and the finish is even better and the best part for me.
I am so glad I tried this one, an experience that is hard to quantify. _________________ Pour me a glass please. |
