To the American oak detractors it's worth noting the price point of around £20 you're never going to get top quality. What you do get is an accessable dram at around the same price point as Jameson's or bushmills standard offerings which it stands up well against. Personally I Like the unique ( for scotch) triple distilled element of Auchentoshan and it fairs well against Irish equivalents priced similarly across the range Somehow it's more whisky not whiskey like, but still a bit different.
I think that is one of things I find interesting about the American Oak is the subtle notes that remind me of Irish and a gentle citrus. I've just gone from a dram of that to a Jameson IPA cask which now shouts like a concentrated cordial in comparison.
One of the fascinating general asides is how the order of drams influences the perceived smell and taste.
